We are now in the downward spiral part of his coaching tenure. The relative lack of early success really hurt him. Coaches need to ride that early wave of newness/excitement that comes with being newly hired with at least some semblance of success in the form of wins. This keeps the initial boost of interest from recruits, etc. going and compounds in a good way later on. Unfortunately for Matt, not only did he completely miss on his first and arguably most important portal QB, he subsequently handed the reins of the program to a true freshman - great for media hype but not necessarily great for immediate success. Couple that with some boneheaded hires + losing some of your better hires due to what sounded like interpersonal disagreements and now we’re stuck in a rut. Recruits are losing interest. Fans and local and national media are losing faith. It’s only a matter of time at this point but in true Nebraska fashion we’ll let it fester longer than necessary and make it that much harder for the next guy. Thanks, Troy!

I'm not optimistic either, but I'm interested to watch and can't stand the thought of bitching about it on the daily for the next two years.
Guess what? Nobody cares if you watch or don’t watch.

Thanks for letting me know? I appreciate you not caring so much you responded to my post. Triggered.
No, not triggered. Just thought you should know because you seem like the type that thinks others would care.

Severe wanted hoiberg fired
By all metrics Hoiberg should've been fired after year 3 but he agreed to restructure his contract and was given another chance. It worked out it seems but it wouldn't have been crazy to get rid of him. He's still not over .500 at Nebraska even with the last 3 years.

"Hoiberg is 21-65 overall and 6-49 in the Big Ten, with the next game at home against No. 25 Iowa on Friday. The Huskers (7-20, 1-15) have had three straight 20-loss seasons.

“Over the past few weeks, I have had several productive meetings with Coach Hoiberg, and we agree the results of our team are not acceptable,” Alberts said. “No one is more disappointed or frustrated than Fred Hoiberg. I have known Fred for a long time and watched him build and lead successful teams.”

Hoiberg, who is under contract through the 2026-27 season, will have his salary reduced from $3.5 million to $3.25 million and he will forfeit a $500,000 retention bonus that would be due if he were still coaching coach on March 31, 2024. His contract buyout was reduced from $18.5 million to $11 million."

Oh here we go. Severe says the obvious thing out loud and yet there are those on here who think he should keep it to himself. I really think that one of the negative consequences of us being irrelevant since 2001 is that many fans, both young and old, really have internalized the narrative from national media pundits that we can never again be what we once were. And so we “settle” with mediocrity and run off to volleyball and basketball for our dopamine kicks now.

“Rhule is here to stay for two or more years so get used to it!” Or “Rhule is here to stay so what good does complaining do?”

I will tell you one thing it does. It keeps alive the old fire of our tradition. It keeps alive the narrative that we aren’t going to sit by and quietly accept that we suck because we DO expect us to be elite again.

It also calls out the b$llshit narrative that Nebraska is just too far in the middle of nowhere to attract recruits. Ever been to Bloomington Indiana? It is a really nice college town, just like Lincoln is too, and it is in the middle of nowhere. Indiana isn’t exactly an exotic venue. You want to see middle of nowhere? Go to Texas Tech.

It is shows like Severe’s that keep the heat on our administration. Right now Rhule is in panic mode. He knows he screwed up and he doesn’t have a clue how to fix it.

Rhule thought he would have a great 3rd year and then either be the toast of the town or get his "real" dream gig, which just means the next gig.

When that did not happen, the chances of there being a lot of enthusiasm either from him or the fan base, are gone.

Keeping Rhule put NU on the iowa/minny track, super lame teams that never accomplish anything at all and hope and pray for a bowl game.

Rhule was not hired to for those results.

I respect his opinions on football stuff
If he was promoting getting rid of Hoiberg, I think he’s losing it. I get the frustration with Fred’s earlier records but anybody who knows anything about coaching basketball should have been able to see what Fred could build. Did I expect this year, he11 no but I’ve thought it was just a matter of time until he had us in the top half of the conference which is lofty historically for Nebrasketball.

Obviously, the expectations or at least hopes for Husker football are higher than basketball. Sadly the football program was maybe in a deeper hole than the basketball program. I’ve respected Severe’s takes on Husker football for at least a decade. His evaluation of individual high school signees was often spot on. He may be right that Rhule might be fired given a different set of circumstances but the “downward spiral” comment IMO is meant to generate clicks. I’ve never listened to his podcasts and won’t start now but he’s getting the attention he wanted.

EDIT/ADD: 5 years was the normal standard to prove it in college football. The portal has shortened that time frame but regardless of what Rhule said, I still doubt we have the NIL budget to compete with Phil Knight and Mark Cuban etal.

personally I dont like severe when he first came on the air he was a LSU homer and was pretty negative to Nebraska, the ole saying money talks now he does big red wrap up and the Jett award. Do I think Rhule can turn it around probably not. first and foremost he needs to stop doing stupid thing and start being the head football coach of the university of Nebraska, he needs to watch some of TO interviews Tom never boasted about how good his team or positions would be. Just be honest

He is not as their level as he has never coached a team to win against either Iowa or Minnesota.

I’m wondering if he lost his Big Red Wrapup gig. Funny. I can’t listen to the audio to see if that’s actually what he said.

Okay. I finally was able to listen to the WHOLE segment. IF one does that the context matters. He was discussing a THEORY proposed on an earlier 1620 radio show by someone else about the whole defcon rating scale. Severe pretty much stated facts BUT assuming it dooms Rhule to failure is just that. An assumption based on a theory that may not hold true. Historically the rate of failure of coaches is fairly high for guys in Rhule’s spot. That doesn’t mean he can’t pull this out of the fire.

One thing Severe EMPHASIZED was that RHULE ISN’T GOING ANYWHERE NEXT YEAR. So get used to it.

Recruits hear it and stay away. He needs to tell the better stats so they come

Yeah, he needs to lie. Why can't he just piss on everyone's leg and tell us it's raining. Coach does it. Fans do it. Other media members enable it. Why didn't this Severe guy get the memo?

Matt could still catch lightning in a bottle.. it's unlikely, but it's one of many possibilities.

I personally think it's important to tell the unvarnished truth. I know some people want to protect the program from criticism, but this sort of stuff has to be talked about in the open.

It's much more transparent than whispers and conversations held in dark corners.. man I hate that kind of crap.

There is zero doubt that Rhule is set for next year. Nobody is disputing that. But I think it is important to keep holding his feet to the fire so that the higher ups understand that if we have one more crap season that Rhule has to go. The key here is that the team seemed to actually regress this year and not improve. And that was against one of our most favorable schedules in a while. That has to be repeated over and over. There is no damn excuse for regression this year and it speaks to a fundamental lack of coaching skill. And now here we are, firing assistant coaches, while the lip licking, spitting, backwards baseball cap boy can get one more or two more years. He had better bring in one hell of a portal class because his job depends on it.

To that end, Severe may have just been repeating a theory, but why repeat it at all if not to give it some public visibility and credibility? It is clear that he is starting to run the flag of Rhule as a failure up the pole. I am beyond disappointed that Rhule is not working out. I really thought that he was going to be a great coach. But I thought that about Frost too. Another huge disappointment.

In the 18 posts prior to yours, only 1 person implied that Severe should "keep his mouth shut" and I'm pretty sure that poster just likes to push buttons on this board with sarcasm.

As far as the complaining portion. There have been multiple new threads started that was saying the same thing. Or trivial posts about "backwards hat", "lip licking" and "spitting". Those who are asking for the bitching to stop, its in regards to what I just mentioned. Do we really need to see another post on Rhule having a .500 record?

I get it if that continues, fine. But surely you can understand why other might say, "We get it, stfu and bring something new to the conversation."

A lot was riding on this third year. He blew his chance to build momentum, and his only hope now is to try to build a foundation without any hype and without a 5 star QB. He is now entering his fourth season, and neither OL nor DL is any better off than the disaster Frost left behind. In your fourth season, that is now Rhule’s fault and not Frost’s.
