Hoots is a liaison with the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes and has no counseling or academic responsibilities – and never has.

One such document (reported by Dan Kane at the News & Observer) was an email from an undefined individual to Athletics Department staff employee, Eric Hoots:
...UNC does not deserve the benefit of any doubt as long as it only pays lip-service to "transparency" while at the same time exploiting FERPA improperly...
Blanket date information redaction on emails to or from students is but one example of UNC's overreaching and misapplication of FERPA. UNC refuses to convey any information on nature or character of curricular or other academic catalog information, even after the truly personally-identifiable information is redacted.
As long as UNC continues to persist in dodgy practices like this and falsely claim that FERPA ties its hands, pestering questions and doubts like those raised by Dan Kane will continue.
And if the emails the N&O found are innocuous and the spotlighting of UNC employee Eric Hoots is unwarranted, UNC's misapplied FERPA practice is culpable for that.

It's been nearly a week now since Rick White, UNC-Chapel Hill's Associate Vice Chancellor for Communications, sent a letter to the editor of the News & Observer (N&O) calling for the paper to apologize to UNC athletics staffer Eric Hoots. The N&O had published an article by N&O investigative report Dan Kane "How UNC basketball’s academic aide may be connected to bogus classes."
So far, neither the N&O nor Dan Kane has issued an apology, retraction or correction. The only change to the online article made since it was posted has been the the addition of White's rebuttal in a sidebar....

This type of activity has received recent attention through the ongoing academic scandal at North Carolina, which has focused on the Department of African and Afro-American Studies.
The ACE’s initial roundtable panel included Belle Wheelan, who is president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges – the accrediting group that placed North Carolina on probation for a year in the wake of the scandal there.

In the writer's defense , his article ends with some hard truths. Being a unx'er , I'm sure it was no fun writing it. That said , prior to reaching those truths , he states some outright , I dunno , "falsehoods?" Have at it...

UNC head coach Roy Williams has done a good job coaching recruits that were not among the best in the nation. It is safe to assume that he has done great with what he’s had.
According to SB Nation several months ago, it seems as though the Tar Heels are trending upwards with their recruiting. At the moment, the Tar Heels have the No. 3-ranked class of 2018.
Although UNC only won one championship in the past decade, they have gradually built their basketball program.
Maybe, UNC head coach Roy Williams does not want to entertain one-and-dones. This is not a confirmed fact.

It wasn't what Nate Britt expected, the vitriol – the nastiness, at times – from North Carolina fans. Not after how gracious they appeared when the school was recruiting him during his high school years.
Back then, Britt said, “You're like, 'These fans are great.'”
Now he knows the other side, too, how those same people can be not so great amid a stretch of missed shots, or maybe an untimely turnover, or maybe after a few shaky possessions when the offense doesn't flow quite right.

Ol' Roy seems to relish publicly embarrassing his players at length when they do things like foul too much, turn the ball over, lose ball games, or do other things that make Ol' Roy look bad.
Yet, when it comes to his players' (and his basketball program) benefitting from years of fake classes at UNC, Roy is strangely reticent, dismissing it all with a wave of the hand as "junk." When asked about Wayne Walden, Roy's buddy whom he brought in from Kansas to coordinate his players' academics, and whether Walden may have been involved in the academic shenanigans, Roy tried to downplay things and change the subject. When questions swirled around UNC hoops star PJ Hairston getting busted in a luxury rental car provided by a local felon and the police finding drugs and a gun on the ground nearby, Roy didn't have much to say on the subject. When rumors arose that Fat Thomas, the felon in question, had been providing luxury rentals and other favors to UNC hoops players for years, Roy didn't say much of anything to the media. When it was revealed that the mother of one of his star players had been given a cushy, high-paying job at UNC, a job for which she didn't have to do much except fly around the country in UNC-provided planes to watch her sons play ball, Roy had no comment. When one of his players was busted with pot while living in one of Roy's homes, Roy didn't talk about that very much.
So on the topics of long-standing and serious institutional fraud and cheating, Roy doesn't have much to say and would rather everyone not talk about it. But, boy oh boy, if you dribble a basketball off your foot in a big game, Roy becomes a regular "Chatty Cathy" and will give you an earful and embarrass you at length on TV, on his radio show, and in the newspaper. A man has got to have his priorities.
I guess Roy's players are used to their role as "human shields" by now: they will take the bullet for Roy's shortcomings as a coach just as Beth Bridger, Bobbi Owen, and other assorted underlings at UNC have been scapegoated and canned for the athletic eligibility scam in order to protect the higher-ups who wield the real power. Whenever something, big or small, goes wrong with UNC basketball, someone is going to have to take a dive under the bus, but you can bet that person is never going to be Roy Williams. Roy will make sure of that: its always someone else's fault. That's leadership and accountability, Ol' Roy style.

Rutgers Football Formally Accused Of NCAA Violations
The Rutgers athletic department will have to respond to seven NCAA allegations of wrongdoing, most dealing with its football program under former head coach Kyle Flood.
The NCAA has issued the school a Notice of Allegations following an 18-month investigation, Rutgers officials said Tuesday.
The NCAA is accusing Flood of providing cornerback Nadir Barnwell with an improper benefit by contacting an instructor about one of the player’s grades during the 2014-15 academic year. Flood is also charged with failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the program

A THIRD time?! An NOA and two ANOA's. Has that happened before to any school? Ever? Nothing specific about what's been reinstated so lets temper expectations about what it might be. This is , after all , unx and the NCAA. Both corrupt. And , as we've seen , Emmert shows no enthusiasm for sanctioning his babies. We'll see.
Sky dad thing is you're 100% right. Anything to keep their banners in the Ding Dong protected. Screw the kids and their education. After all they're black and will probably go pro anyway is their thought process. Sad that they care more about banners than kids graduating
