Shelby vs North Davidson

OK, help me out Golden Lions' fans. As I recall, Hopper's first year at Shelby he was a wide receiver and Devin Scott was the QB. Hopper sometimes ran the ball from the qb position that year. The following year, Scott transferred to a school in SC (Dorman?) and later played qb at Temple.

Hopper took over at qb his junior year??? Following his senior year, Hopper went to the Shrine Bowl but was considered an afterthought at qb and moved to one of the back up WR positions. NC was getting drubbed by SC and Hopper was finally put in the game at WR. Caught a sideline out pass and outran all of the SC defenders to score a TD for NC.

Is this an accurate account?

Negative. Not an afterthought at QB, they just felt he could help the team better as a WR. He started at WR and KR in the Shrine Bowl. Had one (or 2) receiving TD(s) and one kick return for a TD. He was the MVP of the Shrine Bowl. And I am pretty sure NC won.

Correction....looks like SC won

1997 South Carolina 21-20

Not sure how he won the MVP in a losing effort but I know he did. We were there.

Every year they name an offensive and defensive MVP for both NC and SC. Norris was NC's offensive MVP that year...last year Dax Hollified was NC's defensive MVP.

The Hope kid from Rock Hill who went on to the NFL after Florida St I believe tried to cover him.

Also his sophomore it was around the 5th game of the year the Scott kid who was starting at QB from his collarbone I believe at practice and Norris started the rest of the year at QB.

In fact some of the older Shelby folks will remember. It was the Crest game his sophomore year when number 27 Lawrence kid (can't remember his first name) got blowed up on pitch play by a Crest defensive player and had to leave the game. Norris was inserted into his RB position and Crest couldn't tackle him. That's when everyone knew we had a star.

Not sure when the NCHSAA instituted the change but Page and 71st played to a 14-14 tie in the 1984 4-A state championship game.

Overtime was instituted by 1984, but I think in championship games both coaches had to agree to the overtime prior to the game starting. I completely forgot about that tie in 1984, Page had an awesome run in the 80s.

College buddy went to Page in the 80's and told me all kinds of stories of guys just showing up that moved into the area and were football studs. My buddy wasn't a football player but he said it was kind of obvious when a huge lineman transferred in out of nowhere. Parents set up with jobs and houses, etc... But, they got a taste of their own medicine when Danny Manning left out and his dad was put on the staff at Kansas.

This thread has slowed down due to a lack of trash talk. A reflection on both the ND and Shelby fans that I like personally.

With those who antagonize, I agree lol. We don't have a relationship with them like SP does though.
Usually when South Point, Crest, and Shelby are playing one or the other all hell breaks loose on these boards. We are pretty much like family but just can’t get along. But we always respect each other. As for North Davidson we don’t know much about you but we do know you are the Eastern Champions and look forward to playing you for the Championship Saturday.

I've read many of those posts over the years and been quite entertained.

And, also remind these good people that we beat Kings Mountain, 3A Western Regional finalist Kings Mountain, that same KM who has beaten Crest three years in a row now. I also think you were the Crest poster who had South Point beating us by 14. Shelby progressed through the season. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
True story, Crest starts but just cant figure out how to finish anymore

Not that it's wrong, but this has turned into Shelby memory lane thread lol. But hey when you've earned a great history it's not to reflect on it.
Some of the North players have played against 4a competition and it should prepare them for this game. West Stokes surprised a lot of people in 2011 with the comeback win against Shelby. This Shelby team is stronger than that 2011 squad but ND needs to play physical and don't be conservative. I think this will be a 7 to 14 point game either way.

How does this ND team compare to the team that East Forsyth played in the playoffs two years ago? That was a good game until second half.

Getting closer to Saturday. Looks like the rain may slow down or move on out by game time. The supper club has a tradition to feed the team pizza if they make it to the championship. This year was a little different in that we fed them in the field house due to an event in the cafeteria. I couldn't help but reminisce of my days as a golden lion years ago while we were waiting on the team to get back to school from practice. I guess different can be the word of the week since the coaches press conference was on a different day, the team has practiced at different schools and ate at a different place tonight. Who knows maybe I'll drive to Raleigh a different way Saturday.

East Forsyth put a hurting on North 2 years ago, due to several factors: one being East was a very talented team, would also believe that several of the current Seniors, especially on defense, were either Sophmores still adjusting to Varsity ball, or, were waiting their turns to be starters. Experience now would be the difference, just my opinion....

Does North even have a chance? Wondering if I should stay and watch that game after reidsville. Looks to me shelby has a great chance at getting 1 back on reidsville in titles this week. But rams may surprise some folks with all the sophomores that will be playing.

Way better game than some think. A lot of 2a folks don’t know anything about north so they get slept on a little bit. Will be the most challenging east team they’ve played in a while. Even though north isn’t east

This will be a good game, I think both teams are equal

Hard to say because North was playing much tougher competition throughout the season in 2016. I would say the D is better this year and the offense led by Butts was better in 2016
