Skip the fist fights, straight to knives and guns.
We committed to visiting our beautiful 26 year old niece at her nice downtown Memphis apartment Sunday. Not the greatest timing with the extra bad murder and other shootings this week, told my wife we’re taking her licensed pistol in our vehicle she never thinks about anymore. I’m a shotgun and rifle man myself, but this longtime hunter will gladly pull the trigger on her pistol at a threatening person in an emergency if she isn’t up to it.

Memphis has been a disaster lately. Kidnapping and abduction over the holiday weekend. Sadly the mother of two was found dead.
last night shooting rampage that took 4 innocent lives as the city was shut down while a maniac (at age of 19) drove around walking into places and just randomly shooting people. And let’s not forget he had an outstanding warrant for murder.

The world is a disaster and we need change and find a place to start caring for one another again.

Living here - memphis is getting worse. We are out in the suburbs. And I’m thankful for that. Tell your daughter to be vigilant at all times.

Niece, who loves her relatively new job in her college field at Autozone. I lived there in the 1970s, much worse now, main thing in any city is to avoid being vulnerable. I have always hated being in parking garages solo in any city. Hang in there, met some wonderful, life long friends down in Memphis. We all had to work somewhere, cities are certainly where most of the jobs are.

No, respectfully, i meant exactly what I said as i said it. Honest everyday citizens aren't immune to birthing fools.
Can you control everything your kid's do or have done?? I say it you have that is very rare.. Kid's these days are living in a world of me first mentality and want to belong to gangs who like killing anyone they don't like or can't defend themselves.
I had no control of my kid's after they got of the age to run around.. All I could do was to tell them how not to act... You chose to do what you want when you think you can if you have that kind of mindset.. I choose to let everyone live and have a good life and I will live mind.. But I will not put up with punk's who try to harm me or destroy my property.. If someone does try crap like that on me or mine I will let Smith and Wesson take control of the situation.. I do not bother any one ane I expect the same..

We stayed just off I-55 on the right at the Oxford exit once, hopefully they have more hotels in Oxford itself than they used to. Memphis a longer drive than I prefer from/to Oxford anyway.

My wife's job deals with inner city violence. The biggest problem is that everything people blame gun violence on, is true. It's all true. It isn't this or that, it is this and that.
  • We have too many guns, which makes it easier for bad guys to get guns.
  • Some people with guns are incompetent and never learn proper gun safety.
  • Some people with guns are too trigger happy.
  • Some communities don't have enough good opportunities which leads people to bad choices.
  • Bad choices often progressively get worse. Drug addiction leads to poverty which leads to lack of income which leads to violence.
  • Too many bad things are in the news and people feel helpless.
  • Media companies cover the violence too much. (In the 1980s there was a suicide problem. That problem would get worse after a media company would run a story about suicides. So the media companies collectively decided to stop covering suicides, which helped lower suicide rates. The Media is helping create a self fulfilling prophesy.)
  • People are addicted to technology and are constantly bombarded with unhealthy things.
  • Kids get bullied at school and then go home and get bullied on their phones. There is no escape.
  • Parents aren't taking responsibility.
  • We've created an environment where the Police aren't trusted and the communities with the most violence won't call to get help.
  • Some Police haven't been held accountable which leads to distrust. Some Police have been wrongfully villainized which leads to distrust.
  • We've created an environment where your best leaders don't want to be in politics. So nothing ever gets done.
  • The politicians have done such a good job tearing each other apart that no one trusts that their decisions are really for the best, so no one is willing to compromise.
It is an absolute giant ball of strings where no one is willing to let go of their end of the string so the ball can be untangled.

Get her the hell out of Memphis. I’m begging my 25 year old daughter to get out of Philadelphia. She’s had two cars stolen, a shooter end up in her backyard, a guy expose himself to her, a drunk woman banging on her door at 2 am, friends mugged. People murdered within blocks of her house. And that’s in a relatively “safe” neighborhood!! She just got a job over in New Jersey (suburban) and I’m trying to get her to move there.

Booking is crazy right now. I shoulda done it forever ago, I’ve got tickets, can’t find a place close, so it’s looking like maybe Tupelo which I know nothing about, but it’s far away from Memphis and that’s what I prefer.

Well listed, and that second point is scary to think about, all the people with guns in their glove compartments, with little to no training, and many rarely practice their loading and shooting.

She has several friends working in Memphis, she won’t be leaving now that she has her dream job after being over qualified for her first couple of jobs. Sad for your daughter, no crimes have affected her…yet. Her downtown apartment near AZO’s home office is gated, about as safe as one can live in the city. The southeastern section of Memphis (woods back in the 1970s) is the hot spot for singles to live, but you need to make big money to live there, she says.

As far as the gun issue, I worked & retired from the Federal prison system. Seen many incarcerated individuals stay, come & go, plus return after release...

One of the biggest charges for those on supervised release that break their their supervision terms or a new charge that returns them to prison is, a convicted felon in possession of a firearm…

Criminals & Felons do not obey the laws now, so what is going to change that narrative if stricter gun laws is passed for law abiding citizens?

The answer is nothing… You’ll never get every weapon off the streets because those that do not follow the law will circumvent the entire system.. Always have & always will.!!!!!

Well said, my friend. We are in trouble as a nation - I'm not sure what to tell my 9-year-old daughter anymore. I can't keep her in a bubble yet it seems the only way. It's just a sad time in this nation.

People forget these people are criminals. Gun laws mean nothing to them. If they desire to kill somebody they will find a way.

I recall several years ago in NW Tn there was a jail break, one of the escaped criminals tried to swim across the Miss River, the warden was interviewed, and he drily said “Yep, he’s made several mistakes in his life, he made another one today and drowned.” I suspect the warden yawned during the interview.

I have granddaughters that age as well. It’s sad they are growing up in a time like it is these days that will only continue to get worse.

They’ll never know a world or society without the chaos, climate & violence that we see today….

Sad indeed…

And they are letting criminals out of jail as fast as they can. They like to pretend its just people who got caught with a joint but they are letting rapist, murderers and violent thieves out. A guy in NY that just killed a woman was arrested over 40 times. 9 felonies and 2 of those were violent assaults... out of jail with no bail.

I am not a believer in the "there is nothing we can do" mantra when it comes to these issues. Let's say we made a law that attached the death penalty to any felon found in the possession of a firearm.

How about a ban on the public sale of ammunition, or the components to craft ammunition? It can only be sold through controlled stores, requires an ID and limits are placed on quantity and type. Illegal possession carries a lifetime prison sentence or the death penalty.

We can also make gun manufacturers responsible both criminally and financially if their product is used in a crime. CEOs receive an automatic 20-year maximum security prison sentence with no parole as part of the punishment.

And of course, all firearms must be registered. Once registered, the owner is responsible and will face the same criminal charges and the person committing the crime. Possessing an unlicensed firearm will carry a lifetime prison sentence. The removal of an identification on a firearm will carry an automatic life sentence, and an automatic fine of $100 Million per weapon for the manufacturer and a 5-year prison sentence for the CEO of the company.

These are all extreme examples, but I guarantee these are laws that would change the dynamic. Also, none of them are in violation of the constitution so they could be implemented. We don't have a law issue; we have a will issue. Our leaders do not have the will to fix the problem because 1) they can't keep using this as a wedge issue to get elected and 2) it would dry up all that money that flows in. Both sides of the argument have people pouring in money to promote their agenda and there are willing politicians on both sides of the aisle looking forward to cashing checks, saying a bunch on nonsense on cable "news" to rile up the base, and ultimately look the other way while our nation burns.

Crime has always existed & always will…

If there was a solution to fix it, there would be..

The solution to help will not stop crime, but it definitely helps..

Like you know the ole saying, U do the crime, U do the time… Period..

I did for it 25 years & seen many changes, some good & some bad, it’s bad now in our court systems.. The proof is in the pudding…

Not putting anyone down by no means, just keepin it real & straight like on the streets……

Crime…specifically gun violence at the level we’re seeing now…..has not always existed in this country. To throw up our hands amd say there’s nothing we can do is absurd. We’ve tried almost nothing.
