Actually the summer solstice is racist because of how long the light lasts.

Seriously fed up with how racist Mother Nature is towards people of color.
And sexist. Can't forget sexist, bro.

The shortest day is December 21st. However, the earliest it gets dark is December 8th.

Well you see, it's all about the how the Earth's axis tilts in relation to our position along the solar orbital ellipse. Pretty basic when you think about it.
Well link that info up. I understand the earth wobbling in space, but if today is the shortest day, how is Dec 8th the earliest darkest day? That's 2 weeks ago.
ref: Today marks the official start to winter and is the darkest day of the year.

from that link: "Even though the earliest sunset is not on the day of the solstice (in fact it is earlier in December), it is the darkest day of the year because it's the shortest amount of time between sunrise and sunset. This is caused by the Earth's relation to the sun, as well as the angle of the Earth's tilt."

It gets dark earlier November 20th than it does around New Year's Eve. It gets daylight much later on New Year's Eve.

Glad you found it since I'm driving I don't have to look for it.

The same thing happens in June.

December 21st is definitely one of the worst days on the calendar year. I pop bottles on June 21st.
