The obvious answer is no. You don't fire any coach over one play. I'm going to argue that maybe you should. Beamer, whom I like, and who logically isn't going anywhere because of his buyout, and who probably deserves one more year just because... if it were possible, should be fired for one play.
The fake punt, pass, interception today was obviously called by Beamer. The special teams coach doesn't call fakes without HC permission.
OU was not only ready for the fake, it was absolutely OBVIOUS that they were ready for the fake. In that case, you don't run a fake. If you want to go for it, you leave your offense on the field.
Beamer did it anyway, which logically means...
Either
1. He's too stupid to be the HC. (Sorry Shane, but it must be said.)
2. He's so desperate he didn't have a better idea, and he "had to do something!" Which really isn't any better or different than #1.
Or
3. He knew OU was ready for it, but thought they could execute the fake anyway. Which really isn't any better or different than #1.
Is there any other possibility? I don't see one, but even if there is, the total lameness of the fake is 100% on the Head Coach.
So, do you fire a coach for one stupid call? No, but if there is a pattern, and I think there is, yes.
This one lame, failed fake punt tells you everything you need to know.
I know it ain't gonna happen, but if I had a pattern of being that bad at my job, I'd already be fired.
