OK. I was just going by the average that Oklahoma had been giving up prior to our game. I did not go back and look at every game. Ok has given up 1922 Total yards on defense. They gave up 431 last week to Ole Miss and 224 to us in the first game with a new OL coach. 1922-431-224= 1267 divided by 6 games = an average of 211 yards of total offense being given up per game, prior to our game with them. We got 224 yards of total offense in that game. I'm not saying bring back Shula. I'm saying let's wait until the season ends before making snap judgments and, thus, jumping to conclusions. I don't believe there is any disagreement that the offense looked better, with a different OL coach for the 2nd time this past Saturday than at any other time this season, considering the opposition.

It's not what I want either.

If we look back since Beamer has been here, for the most part, his offenses have been painful to watch. That stretch to finish last season was more due to Sellers athleticism, him being more experienced and defenses not yet figuring out how to defense him, than because we were suddenly a well-oiled machine. The one constant in these 5 terrible offensive performance years has been Shane Beamer.

Sellers is the best SC player on the field on offense and that is a big part of the problem. He simply isn't a great qb. He is a great athlete playing qb. The Carolina offense is a lot like a HS offense. The coach puts the best athlete on the team at qb and lets him improvise. That is the Carolina offense.

A disappointing season -highlighted by offensive
woes has put the spotlight on coaches and potential coaching
changes.

Beamer responded by firing the offensive line coach and
gave Elliott the task of improving line performance.
Over the past two weeks- reports indicate that there has been
improvement- first in a reduction in offensive line penalties
and second in better pass protection for sellers. Elliott was
previously hired by Spurrier on the recommendation
of John Gruden.

So What about Shula? . Despite his long resume, as a first time
college offensive coordinator- the results so far have been
mediocre at best- leading to calls for his replacement.
What to do?

It's not clear -at this point-how much line problems contributed
to the offensive woes versus play calling. One reason Shula was
promoted to offensive coordinator was (my guess) is because he
had a comfortable relationship with Sellers. Given that this likely
was Sellers last year- that made a some sense.

With Sellers gone next year - what will Beamer recommend?
My call- they wiil focus on major improvements in offensive line
production.That will take some of the pressure off play calling.
Shula will be retained either as offensive coordinator or reassigned.
Either way he will be back. Besides- the buyout for Shula would be
large and the administration does not want to look foolish for
hiring a coach to a long term contact and then firing him after
one year on the job.

That kid at A&M is what a lot of people think Sellers is, even if Reed is a different type. Smaller and faster, but more accurate as a passer. He can break teams down.
