I didn't read any of the articles or look at the video until a friend told me to. I just assumed that it was a result of a pile up, or that Johnson had already been knocked on the ice. However, this was a result of a cheap shot from the defender who threw a deliberate high kick into Johnson. Granted, I'm sure that he wasn't aiming at the neck, but is was clearly an intentional high kick. Don't know the legal details with the assumed risk in a contact sport, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the other player charged with some sort of involuntary manslaughter or assault charges.

It looks like he came in high with the skate on purpose and I believe it's under criminal investigation. I don't know what British law this would fall under if guilty.

It was a CLEAR cheap shot. Johnson had a clear line to the goal, the defender over skated.
he stuck his leg back to cheap shot him in the knee and would have most likely hurt him regardless.
It looks like he lost an edge, his leg came up and it got him in the neck.

The offender has the most penalty minutes in the league so this isn't random.
