SIAP - Rob DeBoer's take on leadership among players

Bingo; absolutely nail on the head. You know, Beamer this, Beamer that, coaching this, coaching that, and that’s all true, but only to a degree. The guys are the ones on the field. From what I can see there is no accountability or life among these guys but they are dimm sure looking for it. Not everyone is a natural born leader like deboer says, but certain guys are expected to be and actually HAVE to be for this thing to work.

In the vein of on-field accountability, one of my biggest pet peeves is for a defender to have a ball right in his paws and muffled it, then put his hands on his head and emote because he dropped it. I’ll just stop there because I’ll get worked up.

Highly unlikely. I think all of them were guys who played at Scar when Beamer was there under Spurrier
I agree. Garcia who commented on it and said he agreed with DeBoer, I read was one of the players who lobbied in favor of Beamer. DeBoer played for Holtz. Garcia played for Spurrier.

My feeling is that Beamer has lost the fan base. It's not only because of the meltdown against Texas A&M. It's also because the program was expected to be much further along in Beamer's 5th season.

I have no idea. Is his personal assessment as a former player and team captain valid though?
Certainly more valid than the armchairs. Big boy perception from a big boy football player.

Deboer has always been one of my favorite players; played running back like a linebacker. I remember a big run he had at Vanderbilt when they had us one the ropes (yes, it happened back then too folks) that mostly saved the day for us.

Deboer played under Sparky Woods.

You are right. I'm confusing DeBoer with another running back (I think) who played for Holtz at USC but wanted to play for Notre Dame, but was not offered by the Irish. Holtz told him that he would have played for Holtz at Notre Dame. His name escapes me.

He said much that was agreeable. His main point is something that is missing in the “culture.” A word he used and a word the current hc has used quite a bit. Very different definitions.

Probably the RB he mentioned, Ryan Brewer. Both were a blast to watch.

Brewer was from Ohio, got snubbed by OSU. Made them answer for it in a couple of bowl games.

This reminds me. They tried to lose that 2nd Outback Bowl against the Buckeyes almost in a fashion they lost yesterday. 28-0 lead, kicked a game winning field goal to save it for a 31-28 win.

Capped off what had been to that point the two best consecutive seasons at SC, of course following the two worst ever. And the year after that? 5-7. Can’t have nice things.

Did not Lou want to retire and hand it off to Skip? I think Lou thought that would happen. Consequently, like Spurrier near the end of his time here, mailed it in. What's the lesson? Try to avoid hiring legends who are well past their primes.

His final year was the following year at 6-6 when they had the big fight with Clemson (which is always how that should end). And yeah he wanted Skip to take over. But they weren’t going to do that so he lobbied to & for Spurrier.

If my memory serves, it was the beat down loss to Clemson the year before that ended the skip Holtz for HC push.

Speaking of Skip Holtz, I just looked him up. He has had an up and down career. He did well at UCONN and East Carolina. He got fired by South Florida and La Tech. And now is in the USFL where he has won 3 championships in 4 years and over 80% of his games.

We got punched in the mouth the second half, and we cowered in fear hoping not to lose. I know these guys wanted to win, but had no one to refocus them and pick them up in the second half. ATM had leaders...leading.

Basically everything went our way in the first half. Zero adversity to speak of. A&M did have a pick, but then a usually reliable receiver dropped a wide-open easy TD catch in the end zone. The first time things went well for A&M, we folded.
