Not bad on a bitter cold night against a mediocre team, with apathy speading through the fan base. Even I made it to this one. Most teams would die for that. Even after Vteck add Bo and Melvin with Siedel and a few other young studs next year, you think they will draw that many, even if it’s their main rival NCST? I’m not sure if they have that many total wrestling fans.
Penn st didn't know they had that many fans either until a few years into Carl's tenure

I would hope with a coaches change that we shoot higher than that for a replacement even as assistants!!!!
I was actually making a joke if Bob was helping pick the new coach. Going back to when he made derogatory comments about Derek's wife. Sorry for the confusion.

"You have watched all these guys wrestle many times. When guys who don't normally get tired are struggling it's usually a sign that something is off. Iowa lost 6-4 matches and didn't have 125 184 and a true freshman at 197. The only match that didn't go as expected was 149 and everyone is on suicide watch-- Corby"

This would make sense if it was a one off, our issue is we have seen this a lot the last few years. Typically it used to only be apparent vs top competition, now it's more oftten.

If anyone thinks this program is on the rise they are delusional.

This program is going downhill quickly.
I was there when Iowa beat Penn State 6-4 …

in ******* football.

New blood is needed in the assistant room & that cannot & must not be ignored any longer. Mstar & telford bring absolutely nothing to the table as far as development & progression go & their contracts are up after this year. There are so many great solid options out there that would jump at the opportunity to work at wrestletown & get our guys back where this program belongs. If Tom doesn't see that & won't make that change than Beth needs to step in do whats necessary
Willing to bet they sign them to a new multi year deal with a big raise. I was surprised when Tom fired Zadic to hire Morningstar.

Not gonna name names here. Had a conversation with a former Hawk a few weeks back that also wrestled at another D1 school. He said Brands practices were always brutal like every single day. Pushing your body to the limit and then some every practice. Spoke highly of the coaches but was not thrilled with every practice being that way. It’s telling that year after year we have this certain “sickness” going through the room we also have the majority of guys flame out their senior years, at least the ones that went through with the Hawks for the 4-5 years of college and also why we have numerous guys get injured during the season and are limping into nationals every freaking year. I felt that way about the overtraining for years now and having that conversation didn’t change my perspective, it only made me more sure of my thoughts. I don’t believe I am in the minority here with those thoughts. But I am sure the half dozen insiders on here will tell me I am just a “casual fan” and know nothing…
How long ago was he on the team?

So was Zadick… he apparently had no idea they were not going to renew his contract. Must be that good ‘ol Cold War secrecy.

That’s certainly how it was when I was there, except for day before competition. I made several long posts about this a couple years ago on the old board. But it’s been quite a while since I was there. I hope they’ve drastically changed their training model since then considering how play wrestling and such has worked wonders for Penn State.

I just dont know how he could after a 5+ loss season including losses to the clowns & rodents. If his stubbornness is really that bad then maybe everyone else is right & its time to move on because mstar & telford cant develop photos

This makes perfect sense. That would explain the issues.
Dreading practice is not a good thing.

I was thinking the same thing after reading those posts. And this would be a reason why just bringing in new assistants wouldn’t cure what ills us, imo.
Bizarre thing is we have many wrestlers gassing. How do the 2 go hand in hand? Is it just burnout?
No f*n? Maybe there is something to that f*n state system.

Brands fired Zadick to hire Star, wow! I was in my earning years and not paying attention.
What a stupid move that was.

Do the Brands favor their All-Americans from their early championship years?

M* and Dan Dennis come to mind (sure there was Metcalf). Maybe the Brands need witnesses to testify to the success of their system back then. Meanwhile Metcalf thought some new approaches were warranted.

Fading and gassing are often more mental at the D1 level these days, as opposed to actually being out of shape. Can be burnout. Can also be feeling the pressure the culture creates. Can also be mental “tightness” due to the absence of a more free, or loose, or creative, or dare I say fun mentality and culture.

Of course, over-training can also wear the body down over time.

IMO they favor yes-men who never rock the boat. But, they’ll never say that. Instead, they’ll call it favoring trust and loyalty.

He's talking about Mike Zadick, not Bill. And I'm pretty sure there were other factors besides hiring M*. That said, it was a shocker at the time.

I don't want to be that guy, but I really believe some, if not most, of the gassing we've seen this year was illness, not gassing.

THe thing that stands out to me is the incredible salary difference between Brands and Bobby. One guy making 12x times another guy on the same staff? The blame falls on the guy being paid the big money for results. You aren't going to hire a guy to replace BT for that salary. An Uber driver would have to take a pay cut.

This is not accurate--at last year's plunge, I was told by a coach that BT is paid from the HWC, and a lot. The same coach said a couple of years ago, the NCAA allowed "volunteer" coaches to be paid by the school--it was a great thing for BT-- he still got his pay from HWC, now gets a salary from the University with all the benefits.

"Good thing the HWC is paying a U of I coach instead of you know….getting some wrestlers to build the club 🤦"

How HWC spends its money is a whole other subject-- but its sounds like Bobby Telford is being taken care of .

We had a small little practice room for one of our little clubs. During the Covid shutdown, that place had quite a few D1 guys using it to practice. Some NCAA finalists, and champs from several different programs. It was interesting to hear the different mentalities each program had. You could see it in the wrestling for sure.
