Seems promising. Really gotta have Skyy healthy the entire year and we need flowers to be able to handle the ball some if Johnson doesn’t make it.

Denny Crum used to say the bench was his best motivator. If BHH doe not bust his *** every time he is in the game and at practice then KP needs to get him well-acquainted with the bench.

I am sure we agree, but motivation shows up day one. How long does it take?

At this point I think BHH is who he is. He's a Junior - player motivation shouldn't be a factor this late in his career.

I can't foresee a scenario where Kenny Payne of all people is the man that motivates and molds BHH into the player he's capable of being. KP has given and will give BHH every opportunity to perform and he either will or he won't. I don't think KP's "development" is going to be a factor in how BHHs career turns out here. I think the best we can hope for when it comes to KP is that he recruits talent and puts that talent in the best situation to showcase their skills and succeed. I don't see Kenny Payne molding a Kyle Kuric or a Russ Smith level player into a high end college player. He's not going to motivate, develop and "extract" talent out of a kid. He's either going to be successful here by finally landing elite recruits and allowing them the freedom to showcase their skills or he's going to fail, IMO.

BHH has some talent and tools to be a pretty good college player. But yeah if he isn't motivated after last season then I don't think he'll ever be. He actually did play some solid defense late last year at times but others couldn't really help out much there. If he can develop a couple of go to moves, focus on rebounding and defending, he could have a solid year.

“I’d say probably (Payne) was the first coach that actually sat down with me and took his time to develop my whole entire game,” Richards said. “I’d say we were in the gym every single night. I can talk to him about anything. That dude’s like family.

Developing and motivating are two different things. If a player is motivated - most coaches can develop them. The greatest coaches motivate players AND develop them. Washington even says on the link you provided “IF YOU WANT TO MEET THEM” (referring to lofty career goals) that Payne will develop them. He makes no mention of Kenny leading the charge or motivating him to be a better player - he simply said Payne was available if you wanted to work. Which as an assistant at a program like UK - I’m sure KP had more free time than most assistant coaches.

Rick motivated and developed. That’s how he was able to take lesser talent and win. That’s why Cals success rate is so high with his recruits - he targets the most talented AND the most motivated because those kids require the least amount of work. I have no doubt Payne knows the game and knows how to develop a kid one on one. What I doubt his ability to be a program leader and take lesser talented kids and both motivate and develop them. Kenny Payne isn’t going to have the quality of players he had at UK - he’s just not.

I am rooting for this guy, obviously he is a Card so that's enough reason to do so.

It is possible he just isn't as good as the scouts thought he was. We figure to find out very early this season with him.

The team appears to have more depth than last year, so just going to wait and see how each guy does and how they are used. It doesn't feel like we need to see unproductive guys playing heavy minutes this go round.

I know what happened last year. It feels like it's on the line for a lot of people within the program this year.

I would agree about the bench being a great motivator, but hell I'm 61 years old. Different day and age with these youngsters. Gotta find a different way to motivate. They'll just up and transfer nowadays.

sometimes it's actually more about genetics and diets. you can be motivated to do something but not actually have the energy to do it. these are two separate things. you cannot make yourself a high motor person, at least not w/o ingesting stimulants, if your dna doesn't allow it. bhh may just be exactly who he is, which is maybe only a person who plays sparse minutes instead of longer periods.

I think the fact BHH is still here says a little something about him. The yearning to win the game is what always motivated me, always kept my motor going. It's got to be about the W.

BHH had 0 points twice against Virginia. coaches need to watch the tape of these games with him.
BHH will be useless against zone defense otherwise.
