I heard through the grapevine that Franklin’s Garrett Young got injured vs Rabun County but that was also via some Smoky Mtn folks so I’m not sure if true or not. But if true, that’s a horrific blow to him and that squad. Cause they’re very legit this year.

I had heard this from some people from Swain as well.

I was hoping Murphy and Robbinsville would get another shot at a title and rep the mountains this year but now I'm not so sure either team will make it.

Robbinsville will still be in the 1A title game this year, there's nobody in the 1A west that has any chance of beating them.

I was told last night Murphy High's enrollment this year is at 350, their stay in 2A will be very short lived at the current rate.

Based on what I saw from Corvian last year and knowing everything they brought back I don't see anyone in the 2A west beating them this year unfortunately
How was Franklin you thinking they've got a shot in 5a? I know both Franklin and Murphy were without their stud backs.

Some thoughts after week one after asking around and watching some of the streams of the games back this weekend.

- Lack of depth and experience really hurt Swain, Murphy and Robbinsville.
- From what I’ve heard Swain, Cherokee and Robbinsville may have lost key players for a while with injuries.
- Swains new coach is also trying to trying plug a square peg into a round hole with the type of offense he’s trying to run.

I figured Murphy would struggle in the non SMC part of the schedule mainly because of key losses on both the O and D lines. But I figured the Dogs would improve and be ready by the time the SMC schedule and playoffs rolled around. But now, I’m not so sure things will improve enough for the Dogs to make a big run this year. Two linemen (who play on both O and D) quit last week (which is a huge blow to an already thin O and D line) and now the Dogs are an injury or two away in these spots from total disaster. As it stands right now, I’m just hoping for another SMC title this season. That would be three straight. Anything else on top of that would be gravy.

How good is Franklin? I know they destroyed a typically really good Rabun County team in a scrimmage, I still didn't expect them to do the same to Murphy, are they good enough to make a run in 5a? I know that division is loaded.

It’s really tough to say right now (about how good Franklin is). I mean I have seen Franklin do this to Murphy before to start the season, and then Murphy goes on a deep playoff run and either wins it all or comes really close. Sometimes Murphy just starts slow for whatever reason. TCR destroyed Murphy too last week in a scrimmage game at Asheville High. Franklin is a good, solid, sound team in every phase of the game and has some size and skill, bit competing in 5a? I just don’t think they are fast enough or talented enough to do that. Now I do think the TCR team that beat Murphy in that scrimmage last week is good enough to compete in whatever class they are in (I think 6a). We will see how it all plays out. I’m just happy football is back!

Yes, Franklin is very solid but going downstate and competing 4th round and beyond in 5a would completely be dependent on Franklin being able to slow down the game with their offense. The style of play would have to dictate the game in order for them to be go deep and they’d have to do it several weeks in a row. Ball control, maintain possession, and have every slow drive end in points. I also think they’d need favorable matchups against solid teams. They would matchup better with a good South Point team than they would a good Crest team.

Franklin reminds me a lot of Pisgah last season. I don't think they're quite as good as Brevard, but they're going to give a lot of teams fits.
Sure do miss having you cover sports around WNC.

I think Franklins front 7 is the best in the area. I just don’t know how they will play vs a team who can test a back 4.

Who is injured for Cherokee?

I’m a Panther homer thru and thru. Here are some honest observations. The Murphy score is not really indicative of the game. Special team miscues by the Dogs set Franklin up with short fields several times in the first half. In the second half Murphy hurt the Panthers running to the outside. They also had receivers open multiple times that the young QB missed. The Panthers were the better team & I don’t know much about Murphy but I could see them getting better and better as the season progresses. As far as the Panthers go this is a good team (Young injury is concerning!) We have some talent but I would be happily surprised if we make a deep run in 5A. If we are healthy I foresee second to third round being our ceiling. Looking forward to opening the new Pit this week vs the Black Knights!
