Robbinsville legendary Coach Bob Colvard was the best at it

Deitz, White, Gentry, and Babe Howell all excelled at it, too. A lot of it is just instilling a work ethic and the desire to improve and work together in everybody on the team. Well, I guess most coaches try to do those things... the really good ones know how to get a bunch of rowdy teenage boys to want to do all that stuff. :)

Are you taking about Bob Colvin?

He was an innovator well before his time, and his offenses ran multiple sets that were hard to defend, and prepare for is what a good friend from Rosman told me many times who played against several of those great Robbinsville teams, and Colvin's teams were always well prepared for whatever they faced on the other side of he ball as well... Great Coach for sure as well as the other men in this thread....Deitz, Gentry and Howell are all legends at their respective schools....Bill Cathey and Jim Fox of Rosman were also Coaches who knew how to get the best out of what little they had to work with, but don;t have the championship trophys that the other men were able to produce with their teams....WNC has been blessed through the years with a lot of great coaches, and those communities and their kids have been the benefactor of that...

Maybe Jim Fox was a miracle worker at Rosman but he didn't do much at Pisgah back in the 80s. His best year being just 5 wins. Carroll Wright came in and immediately turned things around and won 8 games or better every year.

Another old Swain coach (and a Swain graduate to boot)! Not to mention that Coach Wright's own coach at Swain, Pee Wee Jones, was also a good one. Except for a stretch in the 70s, Swain has had exceptionally good luck with coaches. And in the 70s we had *good* coaches... just not *great* ones.
