Truth be told OP I had the same thought.
It’s why, I think it was in the Colorado game, that AM wouldn’t throw a block for Wandale when Wandale reversed his field. AM approached to engage, then all of a sudden stopped and took himself out of the play

I thought he probably wanted to block, then saw there were too many defenders for his block to make a difference and heard his coach’s voice in his head saying “don’t do anything stupid” and wisely backed out of it.
