Season is done. We've had 4 years of Martinez; I'm sure if he played the rest of the year we'd get a couple more wins and he'd have some games with great moments, a la Northwestern

However, it's time to prepare for the future.

A 5-7 Husker season means nothing to me; and I suspect for most Husker fans.

To be honest, we'd probably get those couple wins even with Smothers.

Who knows, with our defense improving you never know how a freshman might grow. I'd be ok seeing a freshman make mistakes but I don't like seeing a Senior make Freshman mistakes over and over.

John Cook made a tough decision and benched an All-Big 10 Senior player and his freshman are coming along quite nicely and the team is better now.

What if with Smothers we get 3 or 4 wins?

I just don't believe we can win close games with Martinez. At the end of the season; if Smothers hasn't developed, we have more information to prepare for next year and coaches can try and get someone else ready.

Smothers is not good. Frost or the next coach needs to find a good QB in the transfer portal, or next year will be very ugly.

Stop. I for one plan to enjoy every game from here out. This team is still playing at a high level. AMart was very good today.

Martinez has another year of eligibility. Added to that NU is still playing for bowl eligibility. And winning the West is even still a possibility, even if unlikely. Martinez has some flaws but he's also played his best season thus far and is not the reason for the close losses to any team other than maybe Illinois. I actually feel pretty good about him now and IF he can improve on a few things with much of the supporting cast back next year it could be great.

I don't see Martinez coming back here next year. I think a change of scenery could be good for him, like Wan'dale. I could see him playing his last year at a Pac-12 school and having a pretty good season.

We’d win 2 or 3 games if AM wasn’t our QB. You’ll be very mad when he’s gone next year. Just like Armstrong. Frustrating but this team is really bad without him even though it’s a really old team.

Yep, our offense would be dreadful without Martinez. The problem is we have no playmakers at the skill positions. We have guys like Levi Falck and Oliver Martin players most of the snaps at WR.

If we had a lot of studs at WR and RB, then a Joe Ganz type of QB would be preferable to Martinez. But because we are weak at the skill positions, we need a playmaking QB like Martinez. It just sucks that he tends to turn the ball over at the worst possible times.

I think our RBs are not where we need them to be but this receiving corps is the best in a long, long time. Betts, Manning, and Toure are big time. The TEs are deep and talented. Receiver is not the problem in a million years. OL has been shaky. Good against NW but shaky otherwise.

We still have a chance for 6. And we can only hope Iowa comes in undefeated. With the way the team is playing we could bust their cherry. And that would make this loss easy to swallow.

Yeah. Maybe he will "get it" in year five. You have the first down. Fall on the ground. You have an open Falck and miss a 5 yard pass that would have been a first down on the final drive with a chance to tie.
The dude has been given every chance there is. He has a poor football IQ. If he hasn't figured out how to lead a team to a win against a quality oppenent in year four, he sure as hell isn't going to figure it out in year five.

Agree with the OP. It isn't the big things like the fumble, it is the little things like keeping on zone reads when required, not noticing wide open receivers, scrambling and throwing to a boxed in receiver when miles of green grass are in front of him to run to. Michigan's quarterback did nothing really special, he managed the game and took what was given. It has been so long since Nebraska had a competent quarterback and head coach, our fans don't even know what they should look like.

For me, the QB position is all about the intangibles.

Answering scores, changing the momentum, successful 2 minute offense, avoiding dumb turnovers, throwing the ball away, etc

We don't have that at the QB position with AM

Having two amazing plays followed by two terrible plays doesn't make you amazing. It makes you average at best, a team-killer at worst.

How different might this game have been with a quarterback who didn’t overthrow an open receiver twice on the opening 3 plays? Or several other times. Or is smart enough to know to not back into the end zone and then ground the ball as a 4the year senior. No top program will take him. Someone else at our level might take a flyer on him, because what the heck, why not try. But any good program can see four years of work and know what so many of you choose to ignore - being a great athlete doesn’t make one a winning quarterback if you don’t have it between the ears. I’ve said it since half way through his sophomore year and it is still true. AM never has had it and never will have it between the ears, and will never quarterback a winning team.

I fell for the mirage of improvement I thought I saw over the last few weeks. A 4-year starter should play like he is completely in control, not someone still relying on scrambling ability to get by.
