Rhule and Simpson coaching DT, Ek coaching DE. Remarks on poor effort and uneven play in the last 2 games. Snow can be blunt.
Talk is cheap. The fact is that Snow is part of the defensive coaching staff and was involved in coachng that defense that played so poorly. And if he was not helping to coach that defense then what the hell was he doing to earn that big salary? And let's not forget that it was Rhule who hired Butler in the first place. So neither one can now talk and act as if Butler just fell out of the sky and that he was coaching in some kind of vacuum with nobody else inside the coaching bubble with him. They can throw Butler under the bus all they want (and it is clear that his firing was a scapegoating in order to deflect criticism away from Rhule) but ultimately this was a systemic failure involving the entire coaching staff up to Rhule and it was a failure that began under White in our failure to recruit solid defensive line talent from the portal.

This is pretty much Management 101.

1. People in charge do the hiring
2. The people they hire are not good at what they do
3. Place blame on the person that was hired not the moron that did the hiring.

I had a horrible principal years ago and in 5 years she went through 6-7 Spanish teachers, 3 science teachers and 3 PE teachers.

Of course it was NEVER her fault.

After awhile, it is not the people you are hiring, it is the person doing the hiring.

It is shocking how people that do hiring never think they are the problem.

Yep.

Dude is unquestionably part of the problem, but is throwing Butler under the bus?

It would be a way better look for him to just STFU and cash his checks in anonymity until he's sent packing by either this coach or the next. People might forget that his fingerprints were all over the defense this season.

Doesn't make a lot of sense right before you play Utah, who is going to be giving everything for their retiring legendary coach. The most damning stuff is that Rhule has to be encouraged to get in and coach...especially when his specialty was the weakness of our team, dline. Seemed more critical of Rhule than the old dcoord

The "win one for the retiring coach" thing might be overblown

1. You will have kids sitting out of the game.
2. You will have a lot of kids on the team that have only been there for a short time

Most will just look at it as another game.

Total Snow job.

And hey bud, maybe stop dyeing your hair. It just makes it look like you’ve had a hard life or have made some bad choices. Just go grey so we just see your old. It’s ok. I promise

People that look 70+ in the face but 35 in their hair. 😂

It's a new era when it comes to bowl games unlike the playoff games. Bowl games are a crap shoot because players either opt out and bail or they enter the portal and your team is a shell of it's former self. Then you have the coaching carousel, that has to do some psychological damage to a team, thus the crap shoot.

I have no idea who is opting out this game for Utah even if they have any, I do know Nebraska has a few. I know both sides have players banged up a bit as all teams do this time of year and things happen during practice between now and the game on 31th.

It's best to look at this game as a chance for some of the young players to show they were worth the time Nebraska spent recruiting and coaching them and hope they make a decent showing.

What happens in 2026 as far as new players coming in is going to happen so it's best to try and enjoy the news as best you can and hope we seldom hear bad news.

We'll see. I guarantee if/when we get blown out that there will be a narrative on this board the "Utah had a lot of emotion", "had a lot to play for". Considering we got beat by multiple interim coaches, I would much rather have somebody else coach than a hall of fame coach in his last game for a top 15 team.

Thanks. I will also point out that White’s poor recruiting to the line is what set this year up for being soft against the run and zero pass rush. White knew that he and his family did not want to live in Lincoln for long. He knew that Lincoln was a very temporary stepping stone for him. Therefore, with Nash and Ty around he milked out two decent seasons to pad his resume and (surprise!) left when those two guys were done. He did not recruit well because he didn’t give a sh$t. He knew he was going to be gone.

That means he had no real respect for, or loyalty to, Rhule. It also means Rhule was clueless about what White was really going to do. He knew White would leave, and even spoke publicly about White getting a head coaching job, but he was clearly taken by surprise when White bolted for a struggling FSU program.

Butler was a panic hire therefore. Butler is a decent coach I think when it comes to the nuts and bolts of defense. But not an inspiring guy, not a motivator, and not a good recruiter. He made for an easy scapegoat.

Year four coming up and Rhule is still groping around trying to put together a stable coaching staff that knows how to win and who can gel together as a staff. If what Phil Snow says is true, then it is clear that there was no cohesion, comraderie, or common vision among the coaches. Not a good sign.

I believe what you say about Butler is true and Rhule had little choice but to elevate him from I believe co-defensive coordinator to DC because of the timing of White taking the FSU job and taking DL coach Knighton with him.

I think Rhule believed Butler could do the job and really believed the pieces were in place to make this thing work. Well Rhule was wrong about some of the defense and he and all of us saw what happened and the Penn State fiasco certainly didn't help along with our offense not being up to snuff.

This past year our team had many holes to plug and many issues to fix and only a few were. This coming year will tell if Rhule can get this thing right or something will have to be done again and it's not going to be as easy as just hiring a head coach.

I will give Rhule credit for letting coaches go who couldn't do their jobs and moving to fill those jobs quickly. Now it will be a case of how good are his new coaches?
If these new coaches are as good as advertised then Matt did well but if they don't Matt is on the hook for their hiring and on the hot seat.
