So . . . . Ash?

What's the word on this guy from the early trip and practices? Can we use him at the 1 to spell BMac (or Demps, or whomever is playing there) if necessary? We have high hopes for some returnees (ie Lindsay), but it wouldn't surprise me if Ash is suddenly thrust into an important role for one reason or another. Hope this kid is mentally ready to perform! I think we'll need him...

I heard he's a great on ball defender.

Good. I was worried that you were going to say you heard rumors that BMac was transferring to Holy Cross......

Maybe Sina will if things don't work out at A̶l̶a̶b̶a̶m̶a̶,̶ ̶N̶o̶r̶t̶h̶w̶e̶s̶t̶e̶r̶n̶,̶ ̶S̶e̶t̶o̶n̶ ̶H̶a̶l̶l̶, George Washington.

Somebody needs to educate me how Ash will NOT see some reasonable time throughout the season.

I don't care how much muscle BMac put on over the summer. He doesn't have the body to play 33-36 m/g. He also needs to improve just a tad to be the type of player that deserves 35 m/g on a reasonable team.

When Cobb was healthy last year, Demps was the third option at the one. So it's pretty obvious CC wasn't crazy about Demps' ballhandling. OTOH, maybe that's improved. Supposedly, he was working on it this summer.

The reports that scare me are the few mentions that Law has really improved his ballhandling. Please tell me they are not thinking about him to control the offense ... even for 5 m/g.

Without having seen Ash play and assuming he is a point guard, I think that leaves you with Demps to back up BMac 5 m/g and Ash for another 5 mins vs. the right matchup/pre-conference/lower-tier B10 teams.

I agree with you. Ash will see a little time at back-up point. But with the emergence of Lindsey, a Demps/Lindsey combo will be very tough.

Don't think Cobb was ever healthy last season (even for 2013-14, Cobb was never 100%) - which was a big reason why the D suffered (Cobb could no longer take on the opposing PG).

CC really wants to focus on D and that's BMac's Achilles.

Ash has the potential to be that kind of stopper at the point, but needs to work at the other things in being a PG.

Don't know enough about Brown's PG skills other than he seems to be one of those scoring PGs.

Anyone know how about Lindsey's ball-handling skills?

My thought is that you'll always see either Mac or Demps on the court, with Mac getting ~32 minutes on the ball (and the rest on the bench). He's too good as a facilitator to expect him to sit much more than that, whether he defends well or not.

Those other eight minutes, maybe Ash is on the ball or maybe Demps is on the ball. I assume it'll evolve over time.

In general, I don't think Ash is going to see a lot of time at the point until he's a senior unless he proves to be better than Mac, or unless Mac gets hurt.

A point guard is like a quarterback. The preference is to never switch, unless circumstances force it. NU happens to have perhaps found that four-year point as a true freshman, good for him but less good for those that come after him.

I think it's tool early to decide that BMac can't play defense. He took a lot on last year leading the offense as a freshman so I am guessing that defense was not his primary focus. He's stronger and more comfortable with the offense so hopefully he will make strides defensively.
