One day, years after he derails his career, ESPN will do a 30 For 30 about Dan Hurley. They will say he would've been one of the greatest of all time if his mental illness didn't derail his career. It'll paint him as a victim, and we'll all feel sorry for him.

(I'm not making light of mental illness. But, IMO, something ain't right with this dude.)

I know this isn’t going to be the consensus here. You know I would’ve loved to have him as our coach with 2 championships under your belt you can be as cocky as you want to be when you can back it up! When he’s your coach you will love him and when he’s not you will hate him that’s just the way it is!

He definitely seems deranged at times.

I think he would have dominated here and won multiple national titles. He would have rubbed a portion of our fanbase the wrong way though.

How dare you basically acknowledge that BBN overwhelmingly wanted him as our coach last Spring!

He's a slime ball, and Kentucky fans have never embraced cocky coaches who win at the highest level!

Cal would like a word.
I know it's not fashionable to say that Cal knows basketball. But he does. I'm not taking the time to argue against a decided point. But let's just Cal doesn't know X&O's. He can buy a dozen guys to draw up plays for a dime. That's the going rate.

We've got hindsight at this point. I think most all of us are very high on Pope at this time. But he was an unknown commodity during the coaching search. I would have taken Hurley if he wanted to come, because you just can't look past winning back to back titles. But he's made himself look even worse this season. I watched him absolutely meltdown when he lost those 3 games in 3 days in the early season tournament. He then took exception to some refereeing and scolded the ref for not looking at him as he was the best damn coach in the country.

Similarly to Cal, when you're winning you can put up with a bunch of ********, but it looks like **** when you're playing midlevel basketball.

Given that, and now that we have evidence of Pope and how vastly different his demeanor is on the sidelines (after we just ditched a coach with volatile tendencies), it's not hard to think, "Whew! Glad we missed out on that *******!"

Totally. Pope feels ascendant while Hurley kind of seems to be spiraling.

We got the perfect fit. If we lose I'm cool with losing with a guy that oozes passion for the program. If Pope wasn't the 1st pick he should've been in hindsight and he's proved it. He's lost some but with a depleted roster at times and a tough whistle in the best conference. We lucked up in my eyes

I think Pope will win big here.

That said, idc about what a coach oozes if we aren't winning.

and yet he's most likely going to have 2 more titles before we get 1. That insanity about him, its what pushes his players to greatness like how Pitino gets his guys to run through walls for the team to win.

We can Hate Hurley all we want but he's one of those guys that would have titles here and we'd ignore his antics because he will win games.

No way! He’ll be lucky to win one more IMO. Dude caught lightning in a bottle.

Maybe so. However, Rick isn’t even close to the ARROGANT ******* Hurley is! I mean, he looked Creighton fans and gestured that he had two rings. He’s a classless clown.

Cal was that arrogant, though, and fans loved it. This board particularly eats up the most over the top antics. Posters here loved even Billy Gillispie when he was mean to that sideline reporter. I think Hurley would have been adored.

Cal wasn’t arrogant like that. That’s just a whole other level.

Agree. He is a great x and o coach, but he has to be an embarrassment to UConn.
Prior to the last 2 seasons his win percentage (60) was on point with Tom Crean (57) and Kevin Ollie (55) who would be on nobodies list of great x and o coaches. Also, he had never advanced past the round of 32 in 14 seasons. I'm not sure he is the greatest coach in the game like he seems to think but he sure caught lightning in a bottle those 2 seasons.

This! Lightning in a bottle. Didn’t make it out of the second round for 14 years lmao

EDIT: That’s so UConn. Hurley and UConn have a lot in common. Either win it all or absolutely suck.

Fully understand why many don't care for him/hate UConn.

I respect Hurley for being one of the few in coaching to adapt. He admitted his approach to the sport was 100% incorrect and not working and changed. Not many guys who do this for a living at any level or sport are willing to admit they are wrong and adapt. He was one of those "we win with defense and are tough" guys who thought offensive scoring was soft. He adapted and the offensive approach improved and they still maintained an edge about them on defense and overall.

He openly admits he's an A-hole. He's about as open of a book as there is in CBB. He'll tell you he's struggled with mental health. He admits he's not in for the long term--he'll hang it up once he's burned out and until then it's 100% all out every day. He will act like a prick but then turn around and say "I was a prick and wrong". The thing is he gets players who aren't all McDonald's AA's to develop and they play hard as hell for him and buy in-which isn't easy in today's game at all. That alone carries weight and would be successful here but there's a part of an appearance that matters to the Blueblood programs he doesn't fit that is why he's perfect in the East. I grew up a Big East fan and love the edge that is played with and in your face back and forth during competition but that's my personal preference and love someone who invests everything into something and doesn't care if outsiders like it or not.

Being a sore loser and implying you should get preferential treatment from refs because you won 2 titles is weak crybaby ish. He's mad that he isn't doing a good job this year and thinks everything should be handed to him.
