So I saw Roy speak this weekend

I was at a clinic and Roy was one of the speakers. Some of the things he said....
1) UNC fouled so much this year because they played the toughest schedule in America
2) Called Tyus Jones out for initiating contact and still getting the foul call
3) Gave his entire presentation on team defense... which is the definition of irony

His comment about Tyus is yet another reason he's so easily disliked. He has nothing but contempt for a large portion of the tarhole nation and comments like that prove it. It's condescension. Hates 'em yet knows how to play to 'em. It's self-loathing too. Not only does he regurgitate long-held anti-Duke rhetoric but he believes it just as the unwashed masses do. He realizes that , at the end of the day , he's just like those he despises and it kills 'im. He and those fans deserve each other. Stay there forever , Roy. Please.

Sounds like something the typical Tar Heel fan would say. But that is exactly what he is first and foremost. He has stated that is is no bigger fan of UNC than himself. What else would a Tar Heel fan say. OFC

I think he's just mad because Tyus Jones is the living definition of "the dagger." Oh yeah, that's another team we beat twice this year, LOL. I sense a theme among coaches (including Bo Ryan) that Duke beat twice this year and it seems to center around the foul calling.

F*** Roy William's and the horse he rode in on. Did he mention he'd give his left nut to have Tyus on his team?

I will say a prayer for you RanDEVILman. And on a side note, the name Roy Williams and defense should never, never be placed in the same sentence! OFC

Was this followed by his clinic on how to effectively use your timeouts during a game?

To be honest I went to the clinic to see a lot of the other coaches. One of my buddies who went with me is a UNC fan (although extremely realistic and not really annoying about it) so we basically went so he could hear Roy. I was hoping he might have a pearl of wisdom or 2, but that was not the case. Thanks for the prayers. And in case anyone was wondering I did wear a Duke shirt to listen to Roy, I'm pretty sure I was the only one there doing so.

If Roy ever mentions the words "initiates contact" again, he should be forced to remove Hansbrough's jersey from the rafters and take down the 09 banner.

All Heels have an unholy dislike for Duke due to one reason, K lapped Dean and pushed him to the background when great coaches are discussed. Wooden & K are on their own plateau which eats the UNC'ers alive. How could a man who curses be better than their precious Coach Smith?

While most Duke fans respect Dean for what he accomplished the Heels & their holier than thou attitude cannot return the favor. They create anything to discredit K, like bad language on the sideline. Nevermind raising millions for the Duke Hospital or spearheading an underpriviledged childrens center.

Older Heels experienced the days where UNC was the mainstay & Duke's dominance drives them insane. Good friend of mine who's a UNC grad expressed a comment few days after we won in Chapel Hill. He said "cannot wait til K retires b/c sick & tired of Duke whipping us". I was surprised he blurted that out but it showed how Duke is in their heads.

Roy knows next year is big for him with all the returning players, the pressure is on for UNC to get out of big bad Duke's shadow.

Take it easy on Roy, as we speak I'm sure he's having another trophy prepared for K to present to him at next years UNC-Duke game in Chapel Hill for winning the National Title this year. lol

it is amazing that some are complaining about things being done today that THans did on the regular and they loved it...he never fouled, never fouled out, played 1,000,000 mph, ran through people, danced all over the paint, you couldnt breathe on him or it was a foul (great freethrow shooter).....and he was the greatest thing since sliced bread

When i was in indy for the games, there were some big wigs that i was hanging out with after both the sat contests and the monday night game. They were some pretty big Tar heel supporters (former donors) that are high up in the state of NC. Anyway, i asked them multiple questions about K, Roy, USA Basketball etc. Without boring you with all of the details of that conversation the top three things came out of that that really stood out to me.

They all respect the hell out of K and what he stands for. They all think K is as stand up and honest/genuine as they come. They just, as tar heel fans, don't like when duke wins. They feel the exact opposite for Roy. They say he is a phony, whining, and a plain dishonest person (shocked me they said person not coach) and runs a dishonest program. USA Basketball- K is as selfless as they come- told me many stories about this selflessness, one of which actually happened last Sunday at the final 4. Roy to quote them, "despises USA basketball" and a lot of that comes from the success that K has had. He talks **** about USA basketball, he doesn't support USA basketball and as you would expect he says K should give up the gig b/c it's unfair.
many of this is not ground breaking stuff, but to hear it from high up NC officials that are long time UNC supporters is shocking to me. long story short, they can't wait until Roy leaves- their words.

It was at Myrtle Beach. Billy Donovan was there, Jacobson (N. Iowa), and Bob Knight (didn't really have much important to say just kind of put on a show...funny though), and a few other mid-major/high high school level guys.

There's nothing sadder than when a coach's saltiness from the season bleeds over into his presentation at a postseason clinic.

It's not a shock. We've been hearing for years that Roy isn't very popular with his peers.

Pisgah,

When we were checking into out hotel we were waiting in line and one of the guys I went with walks over to the concierge table to grab a newspaper. When he does the man checking in at the concierge reaches for the same paper and they have an awkward exchange. The man takes the paper and my friend grabs the next one in the stack. As my frined walks back over he is smiling and says "Thats Bob Knight", we all turn and look and sure enough it was him. We kind of nod knowingly and get back in our line. I never knew this, but he is actually pretty tall, 6'1 or 6'2 I would say.

First, I don't know why you were at a place with Roy Williams speaking, but I sure as hell would never go back.

Second, he sucks. He's an idiot. I hate him. He can't stand that he isn't Dean or K. His teams underachieve and did at Kansas, too. He doesn't know how to make a team better and how to take the parts to make a whole.

Third, he still sucks. Coach K wasn't speaking because he has a ring fitting to get to.

Not to pour on a cold water on the collective frothing at the mouth, but is there any substantiation for the OP's account to make sure (i) Roy said any of this stuff; (ii) Roy's words are placed in context? Frankly, the first and third points aren't really all that interesting and the second point would entirely depends on context -- i.e., did he mention Tyus just for the purposes of instructing how he'd defend a guard who initiates contract, or was he trying to criticize Tyus for getting away with something? The former really wouldn't be a big deal at all. My impression is that it seems we're making a mountain out of mole hill.

None of this surprises me. We've heard some of the stuff Roy has said over the years. He's a gift.

I wonder if his opinion on USA hoops has anything to do with K's friend Dean Smith giving USA hoops the thumbs up for K to be the coach?

Aah,

I wasn't trying to make a mountain out of anything, I just read this board and know that some people on here like to poke fun at Roy from time to time, so thats what I was doing. Sorry you didn't find it interesting or even slightly amusing, I guess its not for everyone. If you don't believe I was there I guess thats fine. The first two points are not the kind of thing you should say at a coaches clinic in my opinion and they just sounded like sour grapes to me. The Tyus Jones remark was completely undeserved. He was basically explaining why Carolina fouled so much this year before he began his presentation about how he teaches defense (which was okay by the way, just not what you'd expect him to talk about...that would be secondary break since thats what he is known for in coaching circles). He basically said they fouled so much because they played a tough schedule, his big men were bad a post defense, and "guards like Tyus Jones, throw their body into you and initiate contact." Possibly he was making a joke but no one laughed. Possibly he was commenting on the nature of the game in today's college basketball world, but it seems to me their are better ways of doing that. Anyways, I have heard him speak on other occasions and he was better. Mainly because he talked about his break offense which is something he/and other UNC coaches are known for. I had the same issues when I heard Leonard Hamilton (who should speak about defense) discuss his team's secondary break one year after they averaged like 62ppg. But I was sure no one on here really wanted to discuss Leonard Hamilton at all.

I think many in the UNC Basketball world are certainly tiring of aw gosh, gawllea, and the dad gum world and personality of Roy Goober Williams. To me he has become as repulsive as many of the Tar Hole fans.

I've never been able to understand the hate that comes with K coaching the USA team? Why don't other coaches complain about the college coaches that coach the junior national teams and actually coach the high school recruits? K coaches the NBA professionals.

People complain about his access to the recruits when the other coaches have even more access to them than K does. At least K hasn't cut an NBA player to make way for a recruit like Cal did.

This reflects one of the real problems with Roy. He lacks the integrity to give credit to others - as many rabid fans do. I'd say he's more than a fan but a rabid fan. He lacks graciousness and the ability to genuinely feel good for another team; unlike K, who has the maturity to show genuine graciousness to other teams when they defeat Duke.

Roy has a bad chip on his shoulder and is a mess, imo. He is not a bad coach and can do well with great talent; but he lets his fandom get the best of him.

I'm telling you right now if he wasn't the UNC coach he would be that obnoxious UNC fan/co-worker that we would just dread to encounter every day at work and he definitely would be one of those THR posters that we disdain . He may actually be a THR poster for all we know. OFC

Out of any coaches I could see Roy being one that posts in his teams message board lol! On a side note I was carrying around the SI mag today with Tyus on it in a grocery store to buy it and a guy in the frozen who I'm an acquaintance with said don't tell me you're getting that! Then told me how we were handing the trophy and didn't play anybody in the tourney besides Wisconsin and I said it wasn't our fault UK couldn't beat Wisky so we would have a shot at that "great" team. He said Wisky beat them at the beginning of the year! And I said nooo they beat them in the final four. He kinda shut up after that since he clearly was clueless. Then I said and they beat Your tar holes too lol

Good for you. I can't imagine a Duke fan doing that if the shoe was on the other foot. If a Duke fan did do something like that I'd be ashamed. Just keep your mouth shut if you can't take it. OFC

Yeah I can't see a duke fan acting like that either. My sister who's in 7th grade took one of my duke bags to school yesterday since it was the first day back since the championship cuz of spring break and she heard a lot of crap. I told her how to respond and she said they became flustered and jus hush hahaha

I love the first one about fouling so much because they played the toughest schedule in the country. At first, it didn't make sense, but then I realized that you have to foul when the other team keeps blowing by you, haha.

Roy punted the benefit of the doubt a long time ago. I have no doubt whatsoever he said exactly what's been attributed to 'im in this thread and , most importantly , WHY he said it. He's miles away from being the "good ol' boy fum Asheville" he pretends to be. Petty and thin-skinned too. unx may skate ( again! ) from the sanctions they deserve but if they don't , Roy will be sacrificed to preserve the legacy of Dean. Watch.
