Since this coaching search info is basically speculation and unnamed sources, Bobby Knight has something he would like to say .

I am not a big Elko fan. He showed his true colors when he left Duke. The bigger problem that I see with Elko is that a lot of people are saying that A&M is the best team in the country right now. If that's true and they win a national title or come close (I don't know who on his roster will be returning next year), then we have to wait until that plays out to get him and why would he leave if he is winning national titles at A&M?
What "colors" did he show when he left the Blue Devils?

One day he told his team that he wasn't taking another job and then the next day he took a job. As he was on a plane to Texas he held a Zoom meeting with his players to tell them he was leaving.
Yeah, I forgot he did that. But I’d still hire him at PSU.

I think Kraft is interviewing everyone and then the winds immediately sway to that candidate. First Hartline, then Key, then Brohm, etc.

Mizzou insiders are Drink interviewed and “would probably leave” if he was offered the job.

This is what I can gather:
Brohm
Hartline
Drinkwitz
Lea - unless he gets his contract from Vandy
Elko - long shot circumstances
Key - may have taken himself out

I haven't read a single report of Manny even being interviewed.

Look, I think Manny was a GREAT defensive coordinator - his '23 defense was for the ages. And he also seems like a stand up guy, and has everything in place from a character standpoint. But it's hard to look at his (average at best) record as a head coach and think he's the best candidate, or even remotely near the top of the wishlist. Plus, outside of Elko (splash hire), it seems like Kraft wants to focus on an offensive minded HC to jolt some life into the program. I'm sick of losing big games because our offense can't muster any sort momentum. If Manny had never d-coordinated here, I don't think his name would ever even be brought up in these discussions.

Heard he wasn’t but who knows. Heard Brohm slipped a little. Some people think it is now going to be Drinkwitz.
Right, today's momentum is Drinkwitz.

Yesterday was Brohm. Two days before that it was Key. The week prior it was Hartline.

As soon as there are even whispers that someone interviewed or was even contacted, he immediately became the guy.

Tengwell stated in one of his videos that Manny had been contacted and may have even been interviewed.
Tengwall is great - I think he moves on to become a national analyst at some point based on his film breakdowns and generally likeable character.

But in regards to the coaching search - he's spitting out what every other insider is. His contacts were with Franklin and the current staff and nobody is giving them any details. This is between Kraft, Neeli, and a handful of boosters and board members. It's been very tight lipped.

For what it's worth, Hackenberg said on the most recent episode of the State Media podcast that he thinks it will be Brian Hartline and it could happen within the next two weeks. Hack was told he absolutely nailed the interview. Just another random opinion out there.

I’m wondering how good of sources these former players would really have. I’m sure that the hiring process is being done by a tight circle that have to all have agreed to some sort of no leaks policy. I’m sure that that there would be consequences for leaking info on the search. With that said, I keep coming here looking for leaks. I should probably go back to work out of retirement to keep me off of the boards.

Hack's info is legit. All comes down to Elko.
Things are always fluid but as of today Elko is Plan 1a with Hartline as 1b.

Hack knows people with ties to Penn State football. Just like Tom and others have contacts and are aware of what is happening behind the scenes. No search at this level remains confidential. Countless people have been asked for their thoughts and opinions. They then share that knowing it will never be tied directly to them.

I interpreted Hack as saying Hartline nailed a theoretical interview via his play calls, and that he (Hack) would get something done in the next 2 weeks, not that he heard it’s actually imminent

You may be right, and I get it. But I would imagine that he is more accurate than most sources with his contacts there and he’s physically there in State College. Tengwell’s statements that Diaz has been contacted and the PSU side was very happy with his answers about offensive coordinator and such seem more plausible than most sources out there in articles and on X. I would speculate that Hartline and Diaz are solid plan b type candidates as Kraft tried to land a bigger fish.

Hartline might turn out 2b the next Vince Lombardi, but it cracks me up he's so high on Penn States board and no where to be found on any other big job"s board out there. Only explanation I can think of is, if you can't beat them, steal from them.

Yes, bigger fish.
Nova Scotia has monster salmon.
Get Hartline and Diaz both for the same price.
Then snap a bunch of pics.

I've seen him on most Florida hot boards, FWIW. LSU and FL both want Lane though.

Dan Lanning seemed like a risk for Oregon at the time. You're seeing this a lot in college sports and the pros. Give a young guy a shot and surround him with great resources and a compeitive roster - I think these younger generations are connecting with these guys because the game has changed so dramatically in the last couple of years. Just my two cents.

Jon Scheyer at Duke in basketball.
McVay in LA.
Mazzulla in Boston.
Kellen Moore.
JJ Redick.
Marcus Freeman.
Dan Lanning.
Kenny Dillingham.
Rhett Lashlee.

That is the issue that I have with a lot of these candidates. If you are going to look at their past performance and their coaching records, very few are going to compare favorably to Franklin.

I would take Manny back in a heartbeat. He is having success with a Duke team in a place where it should be much more difficult that it is here. Plus he is familiar with PSU.

Is Hack in the know?

I assumed he was referring to the OSU performance last Saturday as being the "in-person interview".

If he's not, to your question, very doubtful he's "in the know." He has a podcast and needs to draw listeners and clicks so as is every college football-focused podcaster knows--Penn State fans along with UF, LSU, etc. are all starving for some actual details on where our respective schools' coaches searches are headed.

The only coach who has actually interviewed is Key. And today he basically took himself out of it. It's going to be Drinkwitz.

I’d be surprised if something gets done before Dec 8th. Hartline has the potential to be a good coach but I don’t think he would get signed before then unless most of the other current head coaches are off the board. And other than getting extensions there’s no good reason for the other coaches to take themself off the board right now.
