So should we assume Gaines will be back next year?

I think he contributes and can continue to contribute quite a bit. Bring the young man back.
Unless, of course, a certain top 5 recruit wants a scholarship spot. Right? Isn't that the only drama left?

Why did he only play 6 minutes yesterday? Was he injured/sick? He didn't have foul trouble.
Gaines was -12 in his 6 minutes and Beran was playing really well, so there were a lot more Kopp-Beran-Nance/Young lineups than usual leaving Gaines without many minutes.

he will likely get zero minutes , if Jr. comes to NU!

I think this is exactly right. Add to that the fact that Berry was playing well, and Audige was making decent decisions and staying out of foul trouble, and there just wasn't much playing time for Gaines.

I will also note that in 5 of NU's 6 Big Ten wins, Gaines has played less than 20 minutes, his season average.

Kind of begs the question why Anthony would return next season, when NU is bringing in a couple of more guards competing for his time.

I’m glad we will finally have 13 scholarships next year. It should help practices, depth and player development

I think NU really suffered from not being able to hold workouts in the off season due to Covid. A development program like NU needs its players to compete in summer games, where they can work on their skills and get exposed to competition. Top programs with top players need these workouts much less than a program like NU. Lifting weights in the garage and shooting hoops alone at the high school gym just doesn't prepare NU players for B1G ball.

Gaines has some toughness and does defend. Seems like a good guy. But I think his shooting has gotten worse in his 4 years. I don’t see any reason for him to come back next year. Time to take his degree and start working on his first million.

His shooting percentage is better than Kopp, Audige, and Buie and his 3-pt percentage is better than the first two and one point behind Buie. Should they not come back too?
