So, why did Tre Singleton leave?

I'm sure it was a combination of things and we'll likely never know (the full story). The short answer to me is twofold, one is obviously money. Two is what are the chances of success on the team offering the money - to go to the dance this year and next year, to get NBA interest, to on a team of top players rather than the top player on a team, etc.

When 1 is in the same general range, 2 will matter more.

After watching that scrimmage yesterday..... those people in his ear were right, unfortunately.
I wonder if the timing was right though. He was out there, being solid, but not standing out as they are talented and deep.

Had he stayed he would play more, score more, develop more in some aspects of his game. Assuming making the same money he could be more ready to stand out in a more visible place.

It seems to me that players can be divided into two categories, contextually, as I mentioned above - do you want to be on a team of top players or do you want to be the top player on a team? I'm projecting based on my prior NU fan experience and believe Tre wanted the former. We've seen it before with Miller Kopp, Pete Nance, and Robbie Beran in recent years (surely different talent/ability levels, but conceptually similar). Some players just don't want or can't handle being The Guy every game, and I expect Tre was projected to be The Guy this year along with West. I'll bet he, and/or his whisperers, knew that as well and opted for a less demanding role on a better team.

He should have had the foresight to get his NU degree and leave whatever extra $$$ ISU offered him on the table. Best case scenario is he's pumping NU players' gas in a few years with that paltry degree he's now working towards
I really hate degree arrogance. He has three more years of CBB after this year if he wants it, and if he makes a couple million and doesnt waste it, he's not going to be pumping gas. And if he is a serious student, he can get a good education there in a number of programs.

Icr which was the first domino to fall last year, but if you were 19 and watched the roster collapse, and you could go to a top 40 program for same $, wouldn't you?

I thought I posted this before but if the players left because of money, CC has an excuse, but if he ushered them out, CC owns this team. I believe CC has had 5 winning seasons out of his 14 at NU and this season does not look good.

CC did not usher him out. We made Singleton a competitive offer, ISU topped it. Others were ushered out, so to speak, but not Tre. Go Cats!
If you got outbid by Iowa State, a notoriously “financially bare” athletic department, for your best player so he could go be a role player there, then you didn’t make a competitive offer.

Was NU's offer competitive if you factor in the value (and cost) of a Northwestern degree?

The media suggests they spend about $27 million on their football team and $12 million on their basketball team. How does that stack up to NU's salaries?

Approximately the same ballpark, according to published estimates. I think NU is reportedly a little lower on each.

But ISU is notoriously cheap on NIL and athletic department budget in general. Apparently Hoiberg was fed up with them nickel and diming him, when he decided to go to the NBA. Coach Otz is underpaid relative to his peers. Matt Campbell reportedly became exasperated with his NIL budget at ISU.

My point is, losing Tre to ISU stinks because they’re not Kentucky. They don’t have the kind of money you can’t compete against. Especially to retain your best player. The guy you needed to build around to have a shot at being competitive. Losing him over, say, a $200K difference is classic penny wise pound foolish thinking. We should’ve paid whatever it took.

I agree with your financial analysis - I would have paid, particularly given what we've now learned the alternative available buys were. But I also think his ceiling was to be a good player on a tournament team, but not its best player. So for that investment to amount to anything meaningful, we also had to keep our PG and find at least one other guy better than him - someone as good as Mart or Bannhizer.

The crazy thing is ISU has done as well as or better than Kentucky in four of the last five tourneys, including 2026 when they knocked Kentucky out by 20 points. But yeah, they don't spend Kentucky money on players. I'm just thinking that if the money was close and the kid believes he has an NBA future, ISU seems like a team that will have better results in the next few years, play more often on the national stage, and draw the right kind of attention to him. Especially as he saw what happened at NU and the post-season team.

ISU has been very solid for several years. Comparing their attractiveness to ours in terms of visibility is being delusional.

I know this is the world now, but I just shake my head that a $200K difference (not even total.. just the difference) is considered penny wise for a so-so college basketball player. Most college-educated people maybe, if they are in the right fields, make it to $200K per year as their annual salary after working their whole careers to get to that point. And those people would be considered pretty well-off in the wealthiest country in the world. It's insane that this is the market now. It really is a dumb way of doing things.

The average college graduate is, well, average among college graduates. The average high-major D1 player is better than 99% of basketball players. A better comparison is with college graduates who rise to the top 1% in their fields. (NBA players would be compared to those in the top 0.1% or less.)

Put another way, Tre Singleton is much better at playing basketball than most people are at their chosen jobs, and so his services are in considerably higher demand.

Singleton is a moron. He’s not an NBA player and even if he was they would find him at NU. Instead, he’s getting basically an online degree, maybe, and will have a network of farmers versus doctors and lawyers, which I’m sure will do him well in “real life.” 😂😂 Morons are morons. And he might be the king of moron mountain.

I wager the $750K he's making this year, plus his income from the other years, will be a nice little nest egg on which to build a post-basketball life, even for a moron.

Yes. $1M, even when compounding, will be enough to live another 60-70 years in today’s inflation nation… LOL. Terrible take.

An NU degree + being an athlete and you’re pulling in $150,000 at 22… at 30? $300,000+ probably depending on the field. I’ve seen it myself with Mike Trumpy.

God you’re such an *******.

Also, I’d wager that very, very few former student athletes are making $300k at 30 years old.

For someone so obsessed with the superiority of your NU degree you sure do struggle with reading comprehension.

It's partly how good you are and partly whether you are in an industry that is paying lots of money. Whoever plays the oboe in the CSO is likely in the top 20 in the world, and won't ever make remotely as much as Singleton even if Singleton only ends up averaging 10 ppg on his career.

Like I said, learn to read. Start with learning what a "nest egg" is.

Oh for sure. Great athletes are still paid more than great figures in other fields. My point was that you shouldn't compare his success to that of "most college graduates," not that he isn't making an outsized amount of money.

(The principal oboist in CSO made about $340K last year, fwiw)

Wow. Thanks for educating me on the definition of “nest egg.” I’m so enlightened 🙄.

You know what a real “nest egg” is? An NU degree that greatly enhances your earning power for 40-50 years versus a one time drop and a degree from the equivalent to an online diploma factory. Tre’s an idiot. Apparently you are too?

This guy is the biggest jag bag that ever hit these boards and that’s saying a lot. Brags about his 7 figure salary and demeans anyone that sees the world differently than the almighty Baz. Condescending Prick and will drop names to support his case, when we all know he is full of ****. Skinflint has chased more people off the free boards to the paid boards than any advertising could have possibly done. Lou must love him. Got nothing but name calling in his dumb *** arsenal.
