Eight of the twelve teams advance to the quarterfinals. The USA will advance as long as they defeat Iran and the Czech Republic . And because they're in the same pool, the USA will not play France in the quarterfinals.

Track meets are usually boring, but an elite meet with track and field events occurring simultaneously is mesmerizing. The US vs East Germany and the Pan African team at Wallace Wade Stadium was a great meet.

My greatest in-person event was watching Steve Cram set the World record in the mile at Bislett stadium in Oslo Norway in 1985. His time of 3:46 is still the fourth fastest mile ever

Maybe playing for Team USA doesn't mean what it used too mean. I don't know how the team is selected but is it possible that some, not all on this team accepted out of obligation and would rather be on summer vacation. I really don't know if that may be a possibility or not. If so why not have the selection committe send out a note asking all the players who want to play for team USA to indicate so and if not do the same. Itvwill not be a big deal and there should be plenty of talent to still bring home the gold.
Should the US consider going back to sending college players to the Olympics? Select the best 12 college players and a good college coach. The NBA game doesn’t seem to work well in the Olympics. Plus it’s worth nothing that when K was running the show, he had players that wanted to play for him

There are more NBA players on other rosters, so we can't just play like it's Peach Jam anymore. But if that is true, then they are not practicing together as much either. So who knows?

I just watched the replay. France is very good. Our defense was fine. The USA took some horrible shots, and passed like buffoons

What was some fan bases said about the coaching Team USA men's basketball? Just roll the ball onto the court? That's the reason hof coach roy williams kept turning down coaching Team USA. He wanted to prove a guy like Coach K could do it. OFC

France was bigger inside and they didn't just let players shoot open 3's. Holiday looked good but Tatum had bad shooting game

A bunch of college players would get smoked. With some of the best potential talent going to G League, you wouldn’t have access to potentially 3-4 of the best college players that would be incoming Freshman. Guys like a Emoni Bates, Jalen Green, Jalen Duren, etc. Also, I imagine that you would run into different issues than the NBA players are facing. You would have college coaches who didn’t want their players spending a bunch of time preparing for the Olympics. With the NBA guys, they’ve got a lot more power to make that decision versus having to follow what a coach or owner wants. Not the case with college players.

And even if you could get past any issues and have access to players who would be Freshman if they didn’t go the G League route, they would still get smoked.

This. A group of college players may have medaled in the 50s or 60s but that train left the station a long time ago Jordan Olajuwon and Drex would possibly have been an exception but even they were extremely young

Still would be better than watching NBA players get smoked 🤷🏻‍♂️

I mean if our best option is sending divas that don’t care about the Olympics to the Olympics just to get embarrassed, then this whole thing is a waste of time

It will be back to college kids if this keeps up. The NBA wants to be maintain the illusion that they are still putting out a quality product and are about to pull the plug on this **** show

We can't send college kids to the Olympics. Look at the state of the college game. They would get pummeled. To me, it's all about fundamentals, or lack of. Our country now plays a watered down version of basketball. The 92 Dream Team woke the rest of the world up. They've improved while we've degressed.

Probably right. The college kids would get worked but I don’t think the NBA wants to see their brand as “the greatest athletes in the world” be damaged but like you said it really comes back to fundamentals teamwork defense

When I think Olympics, I think the best of the Best. This USA team only has 4 or 5 in the convos for Top Teir of the league. KD, Booker, Tatum, Beal, Dame... and Beal is out and Booker just got there. This team isn't the best the US could have sent but Bron, Curry, and those names have done their time and have moved on. But this roster IMO isn't even close to what should be out there. No Zion, Tre Young, Ja Morant, no Big Man worth anything. But you also have to question if the bigger names wanted to even play.

Saw were a reporter asked Jordan what would happen if this Olympic team played the Dream Team. He said the Dream Team would win by about 10 points. The reporter was surprised and said to Jordan why he thought it would be so close. Jordan said you have to remember most of us are approaching 60.😀

Some have to remember other countries have a lot of players that started in FIBA ball and are stars now on the NBA. FIBA rules are way different more physical and the players are playing for their country. This isn’t the NBA where they are going to let super stars blow by them this is for the right to bring home gold against the best in the world.

I would like to see a high school all star team of Banchero, Griffen, Keels, Holmgren and the pg going to Gonzaga. I bet they would win a few games. Throw in Hardy, Smith, Chandler and Baldwin

If the NBA wants to do something to keep their players being the best in the world while keeping this new playoff setup going, they need to make a couple changes to Olympic year season scheduling. Have the season start a week or two early; shorten NBA All Star break; or reduce number of regular season games by 5 league wide.

All would provide extra time for Olympic players in the playoffs to compete play and join the Olympic team with a couple weeks to practice before Olympics start. There’s also the option of only allowing players that aren’t apart of the playoffs past the 1st full round. Would still give you a substantial pool of players to select from and provide those players most ofJune and all of July to practice together and play exhibition games.

I agree with using a college coach if possible, as it’s the slowest part of the year for college coaches and gets some of the decision making out of NBA coaches hands.

There are so many other guys that would be better choices than the current team, but the assumption is they all passed. If you look at Pop and Collangelo's comments after the additions of Johnson and McGee, they were basically saying that they are aware these guys shouldn't be on the team, but they were the ones who said yes.

Made it to the quarterfinals. Team has looked more cohesive these last two games. Of course, Iran and the Czech Republic aren't top tier Olympic teams. Even still, team USA hasn't struggled and has done what they're suppose to do against the lesser competition these past two games. Let's hope they go get the gold!

Not kidding. They did look more cohesive. You'd pick your team and get your tail kicked. Competition around the world has improved exponentially in the last 20 years. And yes, I know Iran and Czech Republic are definitely bottom tier when it comes to Olympic basketball. But they would still beat the crap out of 5 wannabe b-ball players from the local ymca. Thanks for being snarky for no damn reason though.

In which facet? Pop is in over his head with this roster. Booker, Holiday and Middleton are all still playing in the finals. Someone tell me how Draymond green made the roster. Him and KD barely see eye to eye.
Draymond shooting 100% thus far. That’s not horrible. Perfect teammate for an Olympic squad.

America ultimately got the toughest draw possible, as their path to a Gold will likely include the other three best teams in the tournament: Spain, Australia, and then France. It would have been nice if it fell out where two of those teams might have to go through each other before seeing USA, but that is not how it shook out. But if you are going to call yourselves the best, you need to beat all comers. If USA golds, they will have earned it for sure. All of those teams are solid and know how to play together.
