Theory: Star baseball players make terrible coaches. Usually you need a crappy backup catcher to make a decent coach.

Who's the best player to become a good-to-great coach? Joe Torre? I'll wait while you guys post a dozen names that prove me wrong.

Probably the closest to a star non catcher would be Dusty Baker or Lou Piniella, but yeah most great managers are catchers and Giradi or Scioscia would probably be the closest to star catchers.

I don't know that I would say the Erstad was a star. He played a long time and had one great season.

But Erstad was a spectacular college player, which I think is the point mgbreis was trying to make. Might be harder for a coach to relate to and assist players who are struggling when he had such great success at the college level.

Because of his million dollar donation?
That and because he is a former player and an Osborne hire. Heck, I’m not so sure he should be shown the door yet. I think the regular season championship a couple years ago gave him some time. I honestly don’t trust that he’s going to get it done here though. I hope he proves me wrong though.

I am not sure how that regular season championship in 2017 gives him anything when you look how that season finished!

Oh, I definitely agree. We’ve seen a lot of people base their argument on that championship. I have no idea how the higher ups value it. 1-10 in the postseason since 2015 is definitely a killer to me.

I wouldn’t shed a tear if they blew him out after the season was over, barring some kind of miracle run. In fact, I would probably be happy.
