Late in the 4th, we gave up a sack on first down, again on 2nd, once more on 3rd down, and for good measure on 4th down.

Fortunately we didn’t have a Colorado-Missouri style 5th down.

The 5th time would have been the charm!

What are the odds of that accidental onside kick happening too? Was it the pending full moon that caused these issues?

I don't think I even saw that happen to Mike Kerrigan, but my memory fades. I do recall a lot of punts from John Kidd from our own end zone.

My only trip to Camp Randall was Halloween 1981.
NU went down swinging 52-0.
The highlight for the purple was a 74 yard John Kidd punt that rolled out of bounds on the Wisconsin 1.

My “you don’t see this happen” plays were in the 2005 Sun Bowl game which UCLA returned 2 NU onside kicks for touchdowns. We were ahead 22-0 early in the game only to give up the lead by halftime. Brutal loss for the Cats.

“The last 2:30 of the game featured a lot of scoring. Quarterback Brett Basanez found Mark Philmore for an 8-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 36–31 with 2:29 remaining. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Brandon Breazell and returned 42 yards for a touchdown, extending UCLA's lead to 43–31. With 24 seconds in the game, Basanez found wide receiver Shaun Herbert for a 5-yard touchdown pass, pulling NU to 43–38. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Breazell, and once again returned 45 yards for a touchdown. That made the final margin 50–38.”

I’ll never forget that one. Crazy thing is, we had a lousy defense that year - but we got 2 defensive TDs in that game. Despite Basanez’s heroics and those scores, it wasn’t to be. My only consolation was a seat right in front of the sweaters belonging to the UCLA cheerleaders.

I remember that season well. That PSU loss and bowl game were both out of bizarro world.

So was the Iowa comeback.

Hard to believe that happened.

We got out to a 22-0 lead and ended up running the ball 32 times, while throwing 70 passes.
UCLA ran it 50 times and only threw 24 passes.

My reaction after the first onside KOR for a TD. I said to my brother in law - "at least we get the ball back". After the second one - I had nothing.
