Catchings was headed to BYU and de-committed when Pope left. With Georgia losing guys they can probably overpay to keep him now but he could be a guy to monitor. Indiana native.

Also, Tyrone Riley from San Francisco is in the portal again. His name was tossed around last offseason. Would be a great replacement if we lose Kam.

When you watch the games from the Sweet 16 onward, it is clear that among the other reasons Kentucky is not still playing is that the Cats had no massive, intimidating guy on the boards. The Big Ten teams especially that have moved forward all had a couple of those guys - or at least one.

Kentucky hasn't had anyone who scared anybody since Oscar. Sign him, if you can keep him away from Calipari.
The front court was the biggest difference between us and elite teams.

Moreno is a good player, especially for a freshman, but he would be the 3rd or 4th best big on the teams in the top 5.

Missing on Wilson and Yaxel was a killer. JQ giving nothing was the nail in the coffin.

Far too aggressive for Pope. Guy is mean, I like that pope rejects that and goes for nice guys. Makes the program look fantastic that we have those types and aren’t out here winning and showing ourselves to be alpha and elite and all the things associated with being that type of program. Through his self respect, we look really good.
If Cal gets the guy and he can learn any offensive moves besides dunk it will be a game changer for Arkansas. All they were missing is toughness. He is a tough dude. Not Popes kind of player.

He's like JQ imo, blocks shots, plays defense, rebounds, dunks but doesn't really have any post moves. JQ when he actually plays that is lol. 🤣🤣

Very true. Somto hasn't yet found a way to harness his inner beauty, and channel that into something very emotionally moving and meaningful, in this space. I'll pass.
Definitely too into dunking hard and trying to break rims. I just don’t think it fits with guys who are trying to tell a beautiful story. Sounds like he’s just a basketball junky, doesn’t fit here.

Demary? Nothing to write home about? He’s very good and if you recall, it was between UCONN and Kentucky for his services. Just another guy we struck out on he’s he would’ve been a big help. He’s a big physical point guard. He’s not the greatest shooter in the world but he’s a big game player man shows up in the big game down the stretch against Duke he was hitting his threes. He’s a big part of that team man. He’s a very good player we struck out on.

Georgia has another point guard in the portal. He puts up big numbers. I don’t know about his assist. He played well against us. Georgia in general they smoked us.
OK, then explain if he was so good two years ago till now under Hurley and his system, his field goal % is up, his 3 pt % went from 30% to over 40% under Hurely, free throws up 10 points, assists more then double.
So yes, he wasn't not anything special at Georgia, good, but not enough for bidding war.

Point is, players develop differently under different coaches. Like him or not, this kid grew under Hurley.

Offensive rebounding was a struggle all year. Now, sometimes you have low offensive rebounding because you're hitting your shots- then its fine to not have great off rebounding. BUT we weren't doing that.

We need capable guards and a couple of guys that can get rebounds. Do that and we can compete.

Agree.
1) Cyril doesn't fit Pope's playing style (not a passer, and he is ZERO threat offensively away from the rim), not that Moreno was hitting any jumpers but his FT % indicates he may expand that ability next year
2) Cyril fouls a LOT. I think around 4.5 fouls per30min
3) Cyril's FT shooting is so bad, (improved from 45% to 58%) that team would hack-a-Shaq him late in games, so he is unplayable when you most need him

But to complement a more offensively minded starting C like Moreno, sure.

Ehhhhh not necessarily. Arkansas won the league title and they didn't play a lick of defense. You need guys who can fill it up.
Arkansas wants Cyril as a starter , knowing he’ll get enough fouls to not complain about playing time. He beat Ky in 2025 & 2026. We need this man on our team

I’m honestly not all that impressed with him. The shot blocking is elite, but it’s pretty much the only thing he does well.

I see a lot of posts assuming he’s a monster rebounder to go with that, but he’s not. This past season, he got 12.2% of available offensive rebounds and 15.1% of defensive rebounds when he was on the floor. For comparison Moreno was at 12.2/18.9% and Garrison at 10.3/17.4% in those same categories.

Once you factor in that he has no offense besides dunks, can’t hit free throws, and has twice as many turnovers as assists, I don’t actually think he moves the needle for us very much.

I don’t like the idea of a Somto/Malachi pairing. Not much skill there. Would rather a skilled shooting type big come in to pair with Malachi. Also somto had several stretches this year where he was unplayable for Georgia. 0 points 1 rebound in his NCAA tournament game
