High school, college in the 80's, my crowd was classic rock, mocked the college station playing indie rock, bummed years later when I found out what i was missing out on, by not embracing more styles of rock, and now seeing posts of The Jam, Joy Division etal, brings me joy. Don't get me wrong, I knew Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello but no deeper or harder than that. But still, it was rock. More rock than what a lot of the 80's offered.

and they took a lot of heat for being super misogynistic.

That was kinda par for the rock-n-roll course back then. Not saying it was right or wrong, but pretty much came along with the territory.
