I hope Stoops and OU and the state of Oklahoma can overcome this.

Your wondering if the state of Oklahoma can overcome this? Huh? Its a group of frat boys chanting dumb stuff....period. This shouldn't get blown out of proportion for what it really is.
The question that everyone will be asking is where these kids got this idea? In whose world did these kids think this was acceptable? Is this what the parents of these kids taught their kids? Who are the parents? If these kids got caught, are there others who think the same way that didn't get caught?
This opened up a can of worms for the entire state. Boren isn't reacting so quickly without reason. This is a stain that puts a lot of things, a lot of institutions of Oklahoma, in question. You don't softpedal the response. You chop the head off this snake.
The most appropriate response that he made in addition to closing SAE was to say that they were on their own. OU doesn't provide student services for bigots.
You guys are in the eye of the storm right now. As a Miami fan believe me when I say we've been there. I think you guys will be fine in time. Yahoo just did a piece on the video, but they don't take fact checking to heart much. Your administration has done a good job in the PR department and your President seems to know how to manage situations such as this. There really isn't any way you can blow something like this out of proportion. These guys and girls were so enthusiastic about being racist that they were fist pumping. I don't know if they made up the song, but it is something they certainly took pride in singing.nEveryone has been focusing on the guys because it was a fraternity event, but there were women on that bus singing along as well. Not sure why people arent similarly upset with the racist women though.
I believe it can and will be blown way out of proportion. Sure, its idiotic and the frat should and will be punished. However, its just a small group of immature, college kids doing something stupid. Its not like the whole state of Oklahoma or the university is racist. Heck a good deal of these kids probably aren't even from Oklahoma. Punish the frat, dissolve it, whatever needs to be done and move on. Hope they don't let the act of a few tarnish everyone.
BW, you are old enough to realize that there are many who will.....fairly or unfairly.... equate this event as a reflection on OU and Oklahoma.
And yes, I am wondering if Oklahoma and OU will overcome this. It doesn't mean **** what you or I think.
CT I agree that a few in the media, maybe even the white house, will want to exploit this situation and paint the entire state with a broad brush. Sharpton is probably on a plane headed this way as we speak. My point is that its ridiculous to get so upset about a stupid frat chanting a bunch of racist nonsense. Shame them for the morons they are and rise above it. It shouldn't define a university much less and entire state. People get a lot less upset about more dangerous things in this world.
We have already had one in another thread attempt to do this to the President of the University.
You bring up a very good point and I must admit in a rush to judgement I was guilty of this. I reckon a good amount of these people aren't even from Oklahoma. Like I said in another thread, I'm impressed overall with how the situation is being handled and continues to be handled. In a way I believe your institution shined in this trying moment. There is no preparing for stuff like this, but your president got out in front of the issue and began handling it from go.
Did I say this was about the president or Sharpton? I said others will undoubtedly try to insert themselves into this situation.
