Let’s settle this nonsense now.

Reasons why sopranos is better.

- James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano
- Eddie Falco as Carmela
- the supporting goons are off the charts great
- the story is great
- titties
- it’s hilarious
- it’s iconic Mob genre entertainment that will stand the test of time

The Wire is a great concept and story, with some great characters and actors, that could have been better. I think if the series stayed on “the corner” as David Simon planned, and HBO didn’t dictate things, it would have been even better. On the other hand, the broad scope and different subjects (politics, education, journalism) made it different from anything we’ve seen.

The Wire just cannot stand toe-to-toe with The Sopranos, but it’s still amazing.

I kind of need to go back through The Sopranos. I watched it as a kid and I don't think it stuck as much. But IIRC some of the later seasons were panned, and for that reason it's not better than The Wire.

Sopranos had more to work with. Who doesn't love shows about the mob and italians hitting people with bats? Pretty sure that show launched the whole Jersey Shore/Fist-pumping crisis in the 200's and beyond.

The Wire made the painstaking process of police wire tapping entertaining. It didn't need boobs. It didn't need to kill a ton of characters. Didn't need to be funny. It didn't glorify the mob/crime life. For that reason its my #1.

The Wire wins hands down. Leaving all of the complexity aside, it had better characters as well. Stringer, Omar, Michael, McNulty, Bodie (my all time favorite), Avon, Marlo, Lester....I could go on all day.

Tough call.

AJ Soprano was the worst regular character on either series by far. An annoying little fuckhead, especially during his “phase.”

Sopranos missed out on some points by not giving us nude Meadow scenes.

Preach. The bing is the place to be. Tony was such a badass, and you couldn’t wait to see who pissed him off next. Him killing ralphie was awesome. I wish big ***** would of hung around longer

The Wire is corny. Having rewatched the Sopranos over the past three weeks, it is pretty corny as well, TBH.

Now the greatest show of all time is Amazon’s “Patriot,” with “Mad Men” running a close second.

I would rank Mad Men and Breaking Bad over all of those shows - especially the cheesy, dated, "The Wire."

It has as much appeal as Perry Mason compared to Breaking Bad.

The Wire was good for its time, but it has all the intricacies and taste of a Hardy Boys series upon a second viewing.

If you don't like Mad Men, you are lost.

The Wire is overrated however.

The Wire is corny and dated.

The guy who sang/wrote the opening song for The Wire.

Chris Partlow? He wasn't killed. Sure, The wire offed some characters, but when you step back, most of them survived the entire show.. The vast majority of the people killed are bit characters that really just showcase that on any given day in the ghetto, someone is getting shot or stabbed.

I think the only unrealistic story line is Omar Little: A homosexual robin-hood type of character who has a pretty high body count on him. Obviously, that's a little off the wall and sensationalized... but damn if he wasn't great!

i am talking about all the bodies that Snoop and Chris put in those boarded up apartments, that's all. you said there was not a lot of killing, but there was.

I forget how many there were. That was the only "mass" killing they had, and I don't believe it was in a short period of time. IIRC that was just Marlo's way of disposing of bodies.

I more mean major characters. Without going through who died (spoiler reasons), you had an awful lot of characters make it to the end: I think almost any notable police character, the politicians, all 4 kids from season 4. It was mainly a few high level characters from East/West Side, Sobtka, and some of the addicts.

That's a pretty hot take, and you would be on an island away from nearly all critics and TV fans with that opinion as neither one of those shows is considered corny or overrated.

You can split hairs on which is better, but it really comes down to personal tastes as both are universally considered to be in the top 5 TV dramas of all time along with BB and Mad Men.

Stringer, D barksdale, Bodie, frank sobotka, Omar, Prop Joe.

You can’t split hairs with Sopranos/BB vs The Wire. Wire is clearly second tier compared to those.

I have seen only sporadic episodes of The Sopranos through the years, but have a good bit more time on my hands now, so I'm thinking of watching a lot more.

Where can I watch it from the very first show? Does it require HBO?

Thank you!

Sopranos!

I was addicted to the show.

The Wire is good but I still haven't been motivated to finish it.

Joey is correct. Mad Men is better than The Wire and The Sopranos. I’ve done 3 watches. It is amazing TV and will never seem dated since it was already set in the past.

The Wire was good but not really that rewatchable and the last season was weak. I did think the political campaign lady was sexy.

Sopranos is good. You can watch any episode that pops up on TV and be entertained.

Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Sopranos
The Wire

The Wire ended badly with McNulty's fake serial killer.
Both had their share of characters but Sopranos had more bad ones. AJ, as stated earlier, was the worst. Meadow was no better. She was the "I want to change the world for the better" cliche character.

I had to stop watching The Wire during the first season.

It just isn't that good.

This has got to be sarcasm. Patriot, while good, is mainly just weirdness. Doesn’t even belong in the conversation as best show ever.

The Wire is the GOAT. Game of Thrones a close second. As for The Shield, if it had been on HBO it would be looked at as one of the best shows ever. It was a masterpiece.

I've tried Breaking Bad, but I can't make it through season 1. I've been told it gets better, but shouldn't it grab you from the start?

I'm doing a third or fourth watch of Sopranos now. In season 6. Yeah, some of the characters are bleh, but it's fantastic.

Oz should get more love around here. Great show, though I get it - too far fetched and too many dongs.

They’re written that way, which makes them fantastic characters. Especially Janice.

One of the cool things about the Sopranos was that they successfully transitioned Tony from a sympathetic figure in the first couple of seasons (due mostly to his mother and Junior) to a quasi - antagonist later on. You realize that he is nothing but a ruthless piece of **** who cares about precisely nobody but himself. I still think the writers should have let Furio kill him. That would have been the biggest WTF moment in TV history.

Yeah that's weird. I was hooked on BB from episode 1. The Wire does take a few episodes to get going.

I've never watched Oz, but one of my friends swears it's a top 5 show of all time. I'll probably give it a go this summer.

Deadwood is probably another show that doesn't get enough love. I can't wait for the movie later this month!

Just started thr wire last week. Almost through season one.

OT: but i may like the last kingdom as much as GoT.

Also off topic, minus thr unnecessary gay sex scenes, animal kingdom is one of the better cable series ive seen.
