Watched this last night. What a fantastic scene. Laughed out loud, but wasn’t sure if I was supposed to or not.

Great show. That scene is meant to be serious, but funny as ****. The characters were just perfect in that show. I hated it when they ended it. Probably my favorite drama of all time.

I may have to give The Wire another shot.

I thought it was lame, especially compared to The Shield, Spiral, or really, any decent detective show. Heck, Netflix probably has dozens of shows I'd pick over it.

I'm binge-watching Sopranos now. Watched it several years ago. The good thing about being old is that I don't remember very much of what I saw before. Whenever any cast member gets theirs, I find myself feeling good about it.

The Wire wins hands down. Leaving all of the complexity aside, it had better characters as well. Stringer, Omar, Michael, McNulty, Bodie (my all time favorite), Avon, Marlo, Lester....I could go on all day.

Great characters and top 4 show of all time but Sopranos (and True Detective season 1) are on an entirely different level

Let’s settle this nonsense now.

Reasons why sopranos is better.

- James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano
- Eddie Falco as Carmela
- the supporting goons are off the charts great
- the story is great
- titties
- it’s hilarious
- it’s iconic Mob genre entertainment that will stand the test of time

The Wire is a great concept and story, with some great characters and actors, that could have been better. I think if the series stayed on “the corner” as David Simon planned, and HBO didn’t dictate things, it would have been even better. On the other hand, the broad scope and different subjects (politics, education, journalism) made it different from anything we’ve seen.

The Wire just cannot stand toe-to-toe with The Sopranos, but it’s still amazing.

This may shock people, but I’m also voting the Sopranos.

My bias is with The Wire because I watched it first. I bought the box set on dvd I liked it so much. I then went back and binged watched Sopranos.

My list was updated after this last ep of GOT. It put it over the top.

Game of Thrones
The Wire
Breaking Bad
Sopranos

Peaky Blinders, The Shield, and Better Call Saul down the list.

I couldn't get into Deadwood. Might give it another go. Same with Empire Boardwalk. Ray Donavon went stupid as did House of Cards, Homeland and Sons of A.

Deadwood was only good if csucker is a favorite word of yours. I bailed out after just a few episodes.

thanks to this thread, was motivated to start watching The Sopranos from scratch. On episode 8 of season 1. I'll let you guys know how it ends.
7 weeks and 86 shows later, it's done.

Couple of (obvious?) observations.

One, in the last 6 or 8 episodes, Tony became a much less sympathetic character. Went through the insane gambling thing, the Moltisanti ending, all of it. Became a different (meaner) person. I dunno, I suppose some would say, what are you talking about, he's a criminal, he's always been a criminal, nothing changed. I just remember a Chase quote about how people were rooting for the guy for 8 years, then turned on him, and wanted to see blood in the end. I can see a reason for that turn.

Two, I don't get the ambivalence/mystery about the finale? Isn't it obvious what happened? The guy in the members' only jacket, the way the camera focused on him, the trip to the mens' room and harkening back to Tony's favorite Godfather scene - I mean, what was the point if we're supposed to believe something other than the obvious ending? You don't have to actually see the shot and aftermath to comfortably conclude what happened, right? My guess is Butchie, once Tony told him he had to get right with Bobby's widow financially, figured it was better to complete the job rather than let Tony survive......

I have yet to watch the Sopranos. I just need to find the time to binge it. My friends are jealous of me that I still get to watch it for the 1st time.

1a The Wire
1b Breaking Bad
I have a feeling Sopranos will be in the league of their own like the two above.

I cant wait to watch Tru Detective. Hoping to start in next week or so. Ths is the one where Season 2 sucked, right?

Big Billions fan.

Season 1: 10. One could argue it is the GOAT for a single season of any series, and I tend to agree. MM and WH were fantastic, the setting and story were dark.

Season 2: 4. Bad casting, A ho-hum crime, too many main characters.

Season 3: 8. A big rebound. Ali was superb and Dorff was very underrated. Story was a bit too similar to season 1, and it kind of fumbled the chance to be something bigger.
