Sorry if this has been discussed in the past but who is your favorite guitar player?

Townshend. I don't believe in the concept of there being a "best" musician so thank you for asking for a favorite instead. "Best at what?" is always my question back to people who want to say Jimi Hendrix or whoever is "the best"? Anyway, I'd rather listen to Townshend punish an acoustic or wail on an electric than just about anyone. Rock on...

This. There are technically proficient guitarists that can play a million notes a minute and know every scale backwards and forwards, but make music that is totally lifeless and boring.

There are also guys that learned 10 chords and not much else that make great music.

Zakk Wylde
Vince Gill

And a guy that I can't believe no one in this crowd has mentioned yet.

If you haven't already done so - you should tune into Freddie King
Clapton emulated his guitar and voice quite a bit I think

** apparently I can no longer link a pic.....that's debilitating

I almost added Danny Gatton, but I had named a bunch already. There are some videos out there of Joe Bonamassa talking about how Danny Gatton mentored him.

This is a good news story:

No better way to start a Friday morning than spreading a little Koch around:

Edit to add: i know the above video is a bit off topic. But, Greg would have to be in the conversation.

I love a lot of them. I really like Hetfield and Hammet together, they just freaking rock. I like listening to a lot of old bluesy southern rock guys too, any of the guys that played in The Allman Brothers band. I also really like Dan Aurbach, he isn't super fast and rarely plays a long solo, but he makes some really sweet music with a guitar.

I suppose Al DiMeola would be my favorite. He's the only guitar player I have bought cd's of just to hear his guitar.

Put me down for Mark Knopfler as well.

Guitarist versus how they implemented guitar and arranged songs that became classics? I coudn't tell you if my favorites are really any good but can tell you who I like as it pertains to their songs.
Page, Betts, EVH, Townsend
I got nothing for you on Bonnamassa. He's probably a good guitarist but sounds like he is replicating and not creating. Just my opinion. No soul.

Those 4, plus Hendrix, Clapton and Richards, really wrote the book. I suppose you have to add Duane Allman for the slide players.

Not saying they're the "best", but it would be hard to find a blues/rock guitarist not influenced by those 8.

Hugely underrated is Brian May of Queen. He may not be the absolute best but he certainly should be in the conversation. He also has to be the most intelligent guitarist by long shot seeing he is an astrophysicist and was at one time Dean of a university.

Junior Brown is no slouch, either. On his live albums, he;s always slipping classic rock riffs into his fills and vamps at the ends of songs. Loves Hendrix. Drops some Wind Cries Mary at the end of Sugarfoot Rag, lol.

Doesn't Tom Scholz, Boston, have a masters in mechanical engineering from MIT? I think he invented a pedal that produced that huge Boston guitar sound and built it in his garage. Those two would certainly be in the top .001% of rock and roll guitarists.

favorite?

Steve Cropper

In 1996, Cropper was named "the greatest living guitar player" by Britain's Mojo magazine.

When asked what he thought of Cropper, the guitarist Keith Richards said, "Perfect, man."

Saw him twice at the Southgate House here in NKy; a FREAK of nature on guitar.

If you're a guitar player or a fan of guitar oriented music, you gotta see this dude live.

He was still working his engineer gig at Polaroid when Boston hit #1 on the charts.
