I think the key to determine Conference strength and individual teams strength from a Conference (especially a closed Conference) is “how do you do in the playoffs?” I think the jury will be out on a lot of conferences out there in Chicagoland until week 10 and 11.
Historical Legit question - when was the last time a team from the Upstate (the currently configured 10 team Upstate Conference - removing the St Charles, Geneva, Batavia group in the Old River division and removing Neuqua, Waubonsie and Metea from the old Valley Division) made it to round 2?
Current Upstate teams.
*Glenbard East
* South Elgin
* West Aurora
* Bartlett
* Larkin
* Glenbard South
* East Aurora
* Elgin
* Streamwood
* West Chicago
West Aurora was close two years ago and arguably should have beaten Maine South (eventual 8A champs) in round one but fell a little short in a shootout. Last year they lost to Naperville central 35-14 in round one
South Elgin lost 24-3 to Palatine last year in round one and then Palatine lost to Eville in round 2. Two years ago South Elgin did not make the playoffs - the only team from the valley division that made it was West Aurora.
If and when I get some more time - I will look up all the current 10 teams and go back 5 years to see if I can find a round 2 qualifier - but if anyone knows off hand that would be great! (Glenbrook South? Did they make it in 6A before joining the Upstate? They are next on my list to look up as I think they did make waves in 6A a few years back).
