The first game is going to be tough to take a lot away from. Now if we lose that's probably a sign of bad things to come. If we win in a close game I won't get bent out of shape about it. First game jitters are possible, working out the kinks as it relates communication between the new coaches and the offense, Dawson knows our defense, Barker in only his third start, and this is a good team we're playing. If we beat them by 3 TD's I'm going to get pretty excited for the rest of the season.

I think the better barometer for the rest of the season will come against Florida in the swamp. Win that game and we're looking at a special season. Play them close like we have the last two seasons and I'll still feel good about winning 6 or 7. Lose by 2 or more TD's and it will sap a lot of my enthusiasm for the season

What has to happen in that game to predict a successful season.

I would say fundamentals with good coaching decisions. Also, make a statement.

Cats 42
SMU 21
Well, the biggest statement they need to make is just win the game. A "successful" season begins with a win in this one. This is one of the 5 "very winnable" games on the schedule. Lose this one and there will not be much talk about a successful season. JMO

Peace

Actually agree with Wildcard.
Win this game and we move onward.
Lose it, very hard to overcome and salvage the season.

While I (obviously) want us to win by 50, few of us will care a ton if we win by 3 and it is one of 6 (ore more) wins.

I don't think a certain score threshold will predict much. The last two yrs we've went 5-1 in the first half of the season.....it didn't really predict the last half.

Football is all about match ups. Sometimes you just set up well against someone and sometimes you don't. That's why I laugh when I hear people say, "we should reach a point where we are never blown out by anyone." Even Bama gets blown up on occasion.

It will be a tough game. UK has a strong offense especially in the skill positions. The secondary on defense is pretty good too. Also there are two transfers coming in to linebacker. The game will likely be a shoot out as the USM offense is strong but from what I have read their defense isn't that great. Anyway just a few more weeks,

I think it will be a lot like last year's opener against Lafayette. First team to 35 wins.

Would be a great start to the season to blow them out and see our D hold them under 20 with a couple INTs. Probably not going to happen, but should be a strong win to start this bowl season.

I'm not sure this game tells anyone much, unless we lose (which I don't see happening). UK's season will be determined by what they do against the lower level SEC teams.

If we get up early, we may roll them. If they are forced to pass - with Dawson's O - our secondary could get several picks.

But, if they get up or it stays close for a half, could go to the wire.

If we don't beat them Stoops and the coaching staff are doomed. But the coaches and players knows that so expect UK to win this game easy.

Quick get back to the crap table. You're losing money every minute you stay away.

By the way avoid sports betting. Why give it back?

Kentucky has to score more points than Southern Miss. I mean seriously. That's an insightful original thought you formed with lots of top notch content.

WKU obviously got the best of us a couple years ago and it wasn't too long ago that MTSU nearly pulled an upset. The teams in CUSA are respectable. I don't see a blowout and will be happy with a win by any margin. This team is probably better than 1 or 2 we will face in conference play. Go cats!

Southern Miss will play us tough. Bama use to schedule them in the 60's, and it was usually a tough game. It counted as an SEC game for Alabama.

I'm fascinated by this matchup. They had an excellent year in 2015 & have a lot returning, including a very good veteran QB.

However, their head coach QUIT right before their spring practices. Noone has any clue how their team is going to respond to a brand new head coach who has only been with them for what like 4 months now.

Personally I don't have the kind of expectations that we will win by 20+. But I do think we will get a lead & maintain it all game long. Say a 35-20 victory will be quite satisfying, establish our new offense, get young front 7 experienced, and come out healthy & ready for a vital game in Gainsville week 2.

I looked over their results last year, and for them they did have a good season. However, it has to be pointed out that they lost to every team they played who had a pulse. They had two solid running backs, one of whom is now in the NFL and they lost their top two receivers. Add to that they have a new HC and OC, meaning their veteran QB (who threw a lot of picks against the decent teams they played), will now have to learn a new system. They are getting way too much hype. I just don't see it.

I'm looking for a slow methodical beat down of SM. Not necessarily a blow-out by UK but a game where we take control early and established a tightening grip on the games outcome. I would love to see a front seven that replaces bulk with quick and a meeting closer to the LOS than the 4-7 yards downfield on running plays. I would relish a two-three TD win firmly establishing confidence in our players and some mea culpas by some experts out there.

Yes, WKU and MTSU are pretty decent but did you look at the rest of CUSA? It's pretty bad, especially in the East, which is where Southern Miss plays. There is 1 good team, WKU, and 4 decent teams. The rest are terrible. It's pretty easy to look good when you play most of your games against poor competition.

I agree with this. Their 9-5 record from last year is padded no doubt.

In their defense, they did blow out most of the opponents they should have. This year, some say they are the favorite to win CUSA. Their record last year against P5 bowl teams was a loss to MSU by 18, loss to Nebraska by 8, and loss to Washington by 13.

My point is, a 21 point type victory would be a substantial statement (MSU was pretty good last year). I don't think anyone should be disappointed by a 7-10 point victory.
