From my father and mother.

Always give your best effort in everything you do, knowing you will fail at times. Don't give up when you fail because there are lessons to be learned. Don't listen to people who have never done things you are trying to accomplish. Listen to the ones who have succeeded.

They both understood failure, But laziness in a person was unacceptable. I guess they felt that way about laziness because it is something we control 100%.

After a promotion, we had a class given by the CPD police chaplain,Fr. Nangle. He told us that police officers do God's work and God doesn't make junk! It wasn't until I had a personal crisis in my life, and went back to church after a long absence, that I started getting a full understanding of what he meant. Fr. Nangle, told us to leave work at work and not take all the crap you deal with home. After that, I always tried to do the right thing no matter the consequences. We became good friends and I know he changed my life and outlook on it for the better. Sometimes, all a person needs, is to be pointed in the right direction.
