You can see it in the attitude on the court and pumping up his guys at key moments. He has that competitive spirit and wants the ball in his hands when the chips are down. Interesting ability for a guy just getting into high level basketball. It is a young team otherwise

it will be interesting to see who steps up next season in that role. Kopp? Boo?

I agree, it is pretty amazing how much attitude and belief make a difference. Of course he's learning lessons of things he can and can't do, but he is a solid player at the toughest position in the toughest conference in major college basketball. I've seen guys switch over as "athletes" and just rebound and play defense, but Spencer is asking to handle the ball, make plays, attack the basket etc... He's not even a natural PG but probably more of a combo guard/wing but just doing whatever it takes.

It will be (returning) Captain Gaines.

That would be the most likely scenario. After all he is the most seasoned and, like you said, a captain. Would also add, he is a competent player, which also helps.

But would not be terribly surprised if Boo steps up

Boo might be the best player. And the most important player. But he doesn't seem to be the vocal leader type. From limited action this season he seems to be a pretty cool kid, not given to highs and lows, just goes about his business.

We will be a sweet sixteen team next year! Who needs Jordan Ash when you got all these blue chippers on the team? Wright State lost to UIC yesterday and they ain't no good!

I suspect Boo will be the cool professional leader on court. But Nance seems like the emotional guy who could catch fire and ignite the team. Maybe not this year, but he’s got it in him and I’ve seen flashes.
I dunno, they’re all so young.

I think attitude can actually make a difference in college football and basketball. I don't think it matters nearly as much in the pros, where differences in athleticism are minimized. And Spencer's experience and relative wisdom matters a lot. I just don't see him getting flustered by failure. His ability to maintain focus and keep looking forward is something that is typically only acquired through experience.

Unlike some, wasn't worried about Spencer and his lack of playing organized ball as he is a total gym rat who loves BB and played it every chance he could while at Loyola.

And during the summers, would play in a league.

Of course, he needed to adjust to/get used to the higher level of play, as well as playing within a system (as opposed to playing street ball).
