The walmart thread got me thinking, 99% of the time i go to the grocery store, the people i see have the majority of their food in packages. You know what that means? It's processed, artificial and likely really terrible for you. I rarely see produce.

Basically all we buy that is packaged are protein bars, cereal, nuts and those applesauce pouches. I guess the cheeses and meats are wrapped and the canned goods are canned.

No wonder america is so unhealthy.

Yea they're like flavored tortilla chips made of tortillas. They process the tortillas so you don't have to and boy I'm glad they do because I have no idea how to make them. You should try them. They aren't bad really. Just don't eat more than the suggested serving (about 12 chips or so).

I do the grocery shopping in my house. I spend most of my time in the produce and meats. Our idea of junk food is cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread with natural chunky peanut butter.

Yes.

95% of the time. Some stuff I eat has labels, but it's rarely processed.

That 5% though --> I eat pure ****. High glycemic stuff. White bread, ice cream, gummies, etc.

The last two types of processed food I have yet to eviscerate from my diet is cereal and fruit juice. Cereal I've cut back dramatically, usually gulp down a bowl out of convenience and laziness once every couple of days.

Fruit juice...dammit sometimes I just need flavor....working on it though.

Sometimes my breakfast food is prepackaged, just for morning convenience. But when I do, it's usually the healthiest option I can grab.

Sucker for tortilla chips and salsa (again healthy options if possible). Triple Zero Oikos Greek Yogurt. Beef jerky. Mixed nuts. Rarely any candy, chips, cookies, pre-cooked meals.

Otherwise, it's outside isles of the grocery store. Meats, Fish, vegetables, Fruits, some bread and dairy items. I meal-prep mostly, and generally enjoy cooking to begin with, so don't mind loading up on fresh meal ingredients. The pre-packaged things I do eat are generally healthy and limited.

You people are crazy go down the frozen food isles and get everything you need. Just throw prepackaged meals in the microwave and enjoy.

First decide if eating is a leisure activity for you or if it is an act of survival. I get that by limiting your food intake you are probably increasing your longevity and the health benefits of good food are obvious, but I want food to be an enjoyable part of my life that I look forward to rather than as pure sustenance. So I live 5-10 years less. Oh no. You mean I cut out that "great" part between 80 and 90 years old just so I could enjoy the rest of my life? You're damned right.

You're probably looking at dying in your late 50s.

I'm a poor compared to the Paddock elite.

I eat what fits my budget and what tastes good. I try to buy produce locally from farmer's markets, but I'd be lying if I told you I bought the free-range chicken over the frozen Tyson breasts that come in the 7 pound bag for $6.99.

If eating what I like kills me 15 years earlier than eating healthy stuff with an earthy taste that's worse than pot brownies, so be it.

It all makes a turd.
That's actually a very good point. You should judge your diet based upon the quality of its output. If you are forming hard biscuit shaped stool then you are doing well but if you're spraying like a firehose then maybe mix in a salad or something with a little more healthy fiber.

I think it comes down to the end of WWII and the much heavier income tax burden we all pay than we did 70 years ago.
How?
Both of those have played a big role in families needing (or feeling they need) 2 incomes. WWII required that many American women go to work while the men fought for our country. Once WWII was over many stayed in the workforce, and staying at home was no longer the expectation of all women. Add that in with income tax rates rocketing upward from the 50's to the 80's, forcing many families to have 2 incomes.
So what?
So when both parents work, there is less time for daily grocery shopping, and meal preparation.
Add in technological advances that allow foods and meals to be pre-prepared, and last longer, and taste better.
And wha-la.

<-------- Truly limit my processed food intake. Daily breakfast = Oatmeal and hot tea. Most lunches are fresh fruits, fresh veggies and meals prepared in advance and frozen every Sunday. It's neither inconvenient nor time consuming. Simply dedicate a block of time for pre-prep and enjoy freshness throughout the week.

It can be difficult to make healthy AND good tasting food, while being cheap. But there's billions of recipes outs there, so it's very possible. Even ones that are for novice chefs who don't know their way around a kitchen.

Chicken Breast. Chop up Shallots and Garlic, mix those with honey and balsamic vinegar, with a little bit of pepper and basil. Turns into a glaze, pour over chicken, bake in the oven for 20-25min. Make rice and a vegetable on the side. Both can be done in a microwave.

Does it taste like buffalo fried chicken slathered in Ranch? No lol. But it's pretty damn good. It's wicked healthy. Anyone can make it. and it costs well less than any meal at a chain or fastfood restaurant.

The Paddock is like Lake Wobegon - everyone's above average. I eat only organic, sustainably grown local produce and meats. Occasionally I snack on kale chips with drizzled honey (from my bees on my roof). No bottled honey here. Occasionally I have pasta (flour from the mill down the road), but I don't eat macaroni noodles because the elbows are too pointy.

True. But usually when people spout off on how easy it is to eat cheap, they often forget the #1 cost - time (not saying you did that, just generally). I think that, more than price, is the main reason people eat processed foods. Even 25-30 minutes (assuming you have the ingredients on hand) is more than the 2 minutes to order something, especially for the most novice that cannot successfully multitask by watching a game while preparing a meal.

I'd cook a gay man's ******* because it's prolly the most tender.

Does that count as real food?

You are probably already eating animal anus but just don't know it. So yes, its real food and "natural".

3. Beaver Anal Glands
Do you enjoy strawberry, raspberry, or vanilla ice cream? Then you may be secretly “enjoying” beaver anal glands. This FDA approved food additive, is labeled as a “natural flavor”. The real name for the additive is Castoreum, which originates from female and male castor sacs. So apparently, beaver butt has a raspberry taste to it. It’s one of the most common “natural ingredient” in raspberry flavored goodies. Due to the tricky labeling, you’d never suspect a thing.

Foods that Contain Castoreum:

Raspberry flavored candy, strawberry / vanilla / raspberry ice-cream. It’s also used in alcoholic beverages, baked goods, gelatin, pudding, soft candy, frozen dairy, hard candy and chewing gum.
