In honor of video games and a long snowed in weekend, what is your favorite video game system and why.

I pick the N64. It definitely does not have the best graphics, but the quality of the games and the amount of fun playing them was top notch. If I found one today I would probably buy it and hook it up and me and my kids would ove playing. My sons after school care had one and the kids all still loved playing it. The system features some of the best games of all time:

Mario Kart 64
GoldenEye
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Mario 64
Star Fox
Tony Hawk

What say you TCP?

Edit: just looked on Amazon, apparently many people share my sentiment. Mario Golf is $135, Mario 64 is $300, Ocarine of Time is $350

Agree.

Although Wii is pretty timeless for casual fun, versatility, and tons of games anyone can pick up and be instantly competitive with if they have any skills. The simple Wii Sports & Party games are just awesome, imo.

I flat tore the 64 up tho

Super Nintendo is pound for pound the best system ever. It's library of games blows the N64 out of the water. I mean there are just so many. A lot of clunkers but a lot of great games with many all time greats.

Another for 64. A lot of it probably has to do with the time it came out (college) but it did have some great games.

Super Nintendo was great, but it doesn't even win the battle of best of its generation. Sega Genesis was a better console IMO.

I'd have to pick N64. Tremendous impact on my childhood, got the bish Xmas day and it was one of those moments that lasts in your heart forever. <wipes tear>

The perceived jump in graphics and playability was shocking when you first got in front of it. Game lineup was phenomenal and it really ushered in the true multiplayer era. Mario 64, Star Fox, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Ocarina of Time, Dr. Mario 64, the list goes on.

I've had one of about everything all the way back to Atari, and I'm torn between two that were both big leaps in performance: Colecovision and Sega Genesis.

Intellivision is third because the controllers were terrible and caused a lot of fights over sticking buttons.

Yeah, it's close between this and N64 but there were so many awesome games for Super Nintendo. This was my tops. Still the best football game I've ever played.

Super Nintendo was great, 64 was good too. Both consoles are still have very fun games to play today. I also had the ps1 and 2..we're better during the time, but I don't think those systems have the play value today as the 64 and snes do.

Also only Sega console I ever had was the dreamcast.

Super Nintendo had more games, but the 64 was the better console, better controller, memory cards, plus Goldeneye.

I currently have a ps4 and an Xbox One and I play mostly on my xb1 and the ps4 I use for blu Rays. To me the xb1 is better because of Xbox Live and the exclusives, Halo, Gears of War, Fable. However, if you look around the interwebs you will see nothing but ps4 fanboys hating the xb1.

For those looking for a little nostalgia, check out the Retron 3 on Amazon, it will play any Nes, Snes or Sega game. It has wireless controllers and hooks up via HDMI so the games look remastered, highly recommend.

The 64 has a handful of games that are the pinnacle of their genre, but after that, it's a steep drop off.

My favorite is the 360, simply because of the breadth of its library, the near perfect controller, and the fact that it (and the ps3) brought open world gaming to the forefront. Granted, they were already around before the 360, and the PC and the PS3 have many of the same titles that I have logged way too many hours on (Fallout and Skyrim), but the 360 has one of my favorite games ever: Crackdown.

Super NES has to win based on it's catalog, but I'll be "that guy" and throw in the Dreamcast too. Probably best suited for the underrated VG category, I remember Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi and NFL 2K being a lot of fun.

The PS2 made the leap from the last-gen console better than the PS4 did. A little disappointed in what's out there now.

Exactly. And the sports line up for the 64 was pathetic.

Just off the top of my head the snes had these incredible games the 64 didn't: Street Fighter II, Techmo Super Bowl, NHL 95, Actraiser, F Zero.

What? I played the hell out of that game cause I didn't have much else, but it sucked. You would always have to sub out your QB because he was tired.

You could create teams on this game and also play NFL, college and high school if I remember correctly. That was unheard of at that point.

This really should put each system with it's corresponding generation of consoles.

Sega Genesis was way cooler than the Super Nintendo. Sorry, but for the 16bit systems, the Sega wins out.

My history of video game systems through the different generations
8 bit: Nintendo
16 bit: Sega Genesis
32 bit and 64 bit: PlayStation
128 bit: PS2
Xbox 360

N64 - Golden Eye and Mario Kart were the ultimate games to play with friends, and Zelda OoT is my favorite game of all time.
NES - Just for nostalgia purposes, it is where I got my start and on would occasionally pull out my old system and play Punch Out, Mario, etc... no longer have it though :(
SNES - Probably deepest overall catalog of games.

Was always a nintendo guy and havent really been a gamer since Madden in my college years, ready to have kids to give me an excuse to gain weight and play Wii games with them.

That would be my list as well. That said,I never had a Genesis (friend had one) and it's only flaw was like of titles. Would replace the PS2 with the Xbox. The Dreamcast was great as well.

I have the Xbox One now. It's nice, but to me it is not much of a next generation jump Iike the past consoles. Think the only real next generation advancement will be virtual reality technology.

Also Super Nintendo had Bulls vs Blazers, which was one of the few video games in the 90s that included Michael Jordan.

I think the "biggest leap" I ever felt from a system was the Game Gear.

My brother and I both had them. Playing games on a tiny TV on the way back from the grandparents was pretty unreal for a 9 year old me in 1991.

I am looking at my Virtual Boy right on my desk right now. My roommates and I were playing that more than anything post-college. It's the ultimate "zone out" system to dick around in for 15 minutes when you get home from work - a harbinger to the coming takeover of VR entertainment, no doubt.

My brother and I were lucky to have parents who were down with video games. My mom bought my dad Pong for their first anniversary and they have stories about my uncles staying up late to play Space Invaders and using mittens to protect their fingers.

We grew up with:

Pong (never played)
Atarti 2600
Nintendo
Super Nintendo (with Super Scope 6)
Game Gear (no TV tuner, sadly)
Nintendo 64
Virtual Boy
Playstation
Game Boy Color
Dreamcast

then I picked up a X-Box 360 and Wii after college, but they were more or less "party machines."

Now, on mobile, my current favorite is "Offroad Legends" on iOS.

Growing up, one of my best friend's uncles owned an arcade game leasing company. That kid was truly blessed and his basement set up was awesome.

I had pretty much all the systems growing up, for the library size and quality of games the best for me were the original PlayStation then snes and n64.

The turbografx 16 was unheralded but awesome, same cartridge on home console as portable which blew out the gameboy competition of the day

There won't be any more monumental leaps in graphics like some of those previous generations. The best you can do is PC game.

Dreamcast was severely underrated. Soul Calibur was outstanding, lots of Sega arcade-to-home ports like Crazy Taxi and Daytona. Jet-Set Radio was great. Also, one of my favorite racing games ever, Vanishing Point; the Stunt Driver Mode brought out the obsessive perfectionist in me, wasted countless hours playing.

Dreamcast only lasted like 15 minutes, right? I remember the buzz for that was gone in a flash.

I'm watching those graphics of the Bulls vs Blazers and remember loving it so much. Kids today would lose their ish if they had to play that game.

Still, it doesn't stand a chance to this awesome game for those who remember.

I remember you could run the 45 second shot clock down to 1 second and then call timeout and it would start all over. There was also a guy from Oklahoma State named "Lark" and a guy from Pitt (fictional names) who could shoot 3s like crazy.

So much fun.

My Lord I loved that game! That said, just watching it again makes me realize how freaken spoiled kids these days are with the ridiculous leap in graphics, gameplay, etc. are in today's games.

Don't understand the idea that Sega had a lack of titles. Genesis sports games were way better than Super Nintendo's

This might be an age thing. When I played Sega and SNES, my age group didn't really care about Mario crap. Really the only thing SNES had over Sega was Street Fighter. That was it.

iirc, the Sega rental section was always larger too.

My history of video game systems through the different generations
8 bit: Nintendo
16 bit: Sega Genesis
32 bit and 64 bit: PlayStation
128 bit: PS2
Xbox 360

8 bit: Yes, you are right.

16 bit: Genesis had some very good games, but Sega really struggled to attract games that had depth. Most all of their big hits were arcade-y button mashers. They were good, but not very memorable. The Super Nintendo, on the other hand, had games with a lot more replayability and depth. Genesis didn't have anything equivalent to Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Super Metroid or Zelda. Sonic might be sliiiightly better than Mario, but that's a close call. Street Fighter II was also superior on the SNES.

64 bit: I give the edge to 64. Playstation had market dominance, but most of their triple A titles haven't aged well at all. 64 has more influential titles, and arguably two of the best games ever made: Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.

128 bit: I had both the gamecube and the ps2, and while the gamecube had one of the favorite games ever (RE4) it was also ported to the ps2. The Nintendo exclusives for the gamecube just aren't as good as the N64 versions. PS2 wins because it just had more variety.

Last Gen: I already said 360 is my vote for Goat.

Sega does what Nintendon't for sure, but they were always one button short for a Nintendo-head like myself back then. The blood and Pit Fighter friendly catalog was cool though - when I played at my friends.

I read an article about a video game reviewer who raised his son on every video game system - chronologically. By the time he was eight, he was a top player for some impossible Japanese game. The interesting part was that with everything at his disposal, in a short window, he ended up preferring platformers over everything.

Sega was definitely cooler, also had things like uncensored Mortal Kombat the snes didn't.

This thread makes we wish I still had those systems and games for nostalgia purposes. Guy raising his son on the evolution of gaming is pretty hilarious.

I'll second the N64. Many a snow day were spent playing goldeneye, wcw vs. Nwo, mariokart and nfl blitz. Just had it hooked up earlier and my girls were playing diddy kong racing.

For me it's Xbox 360. I started playing Nintendo as a kid and moved up as systems were invented but the multiplayer aspect of 360 took gaming to a new level for me.

I must have just missed the Nintendo 64 craze.
No one on my dorm floor as a freshman at UK in 1996 had a 64. It was all PlayStation.

During my first year of teaching, we received what was called a fringe benefit check right before Christmas. It was like $350. I had no idea it was coming so I went to Best Buy and picked up a PS2 and played Vice City all break

EDIT - The SNES was a 16 bit console, but IMO had way better games.

I had both a Sega and the SNES and in games that were multi platform like Madden, NBA Live and Mortal Kombat the SNES was superior in every way, plus Mario > Sonic. Then there is Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Super Mario All Stars, TMNT Turtles in time.

So here u go

-8 bit - NES
-16 bit - SNES, see above.
-32 bit - PS1 - another game changer, the discs were so intriging, when I was at my Uncles house one Xmas and saw him play Madden on the ps1 I was completely blown away. My dad had gotten me a Neo Geo or maybe a TGX 16, and when he saw the ps1 played, took me right to Toys r Us the next day, traded in the Neo Geo and games and bought the ps1, I think we played it all night.
-64 bit - N64, in a league of it own, it was the PS1's only competition and was better in every way, games, controller, memory cards, don't agree just look on eBay, you can find most ps1 games for less then $5, while Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Mario 64 and Zelda are going for $200-$300.
-128 bit - Xbox, I had a ps2 and was a ps fanboy, but when Xbox made the smaller controller, then brought all the GTA games over to Xbox, I switched, the Xbox was a better system, loading times were faster, graphics were better, and then there is Halo, which changed gaming forever and for the good.
-Last gen - Xbox 360, Xbox Live, buying games digitally and the largest library of games of any system ever, now the PS3 had better specs, but the online was a ghost town and the only exclusive worth playing was Uncharted.
-This gen - I have the ps4 and the xb1 and like I stated earlier the xb1 is my gaming device and my ps4 is my blu ray player. The ps4 like the PS3 may have better specs, but not by much and nothing that really catches the eye. My reason for playing Xbox is the social aspect, I can get on my Xbox at any time and have 30-40 friends on, playing a variety of games, so if you like MP games, I have someone to play with all the time. While PS has done better, their online service is still buggy and broken, share hardly ever works and when I go to a lobby, most people don't even have a mic, and I mean in COD or BF, where on Xbox and PC, everyone has a mic, making multiplayer much more enjoyable.

Sorry for the long post, but never say that the Genesis is better than the SNES, like comparing Volkwagon to BMW.
