Thought of this while watching TCM channel last night. The featured classic was "2001: A Space Odyssey" which I will nominate to kick off this thread.

Think I have watched 2001 at least once all the way through and have seen bits and pieces of it many times, and for the life of me, cannot tell you what it is about and what the point of the movie is, if any. How the monolith inspired ape men to use tools sequeing into outer space and a computer taking over a ship and killing the crew along the way is just over my head, maybe I am not very smart, many on this site would agree.

Does have a great song though.

I saw it in the theater with Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. They didn't have a clue either.

I got two for you. I’ve tried multiples times to watch these because they are supposedly two of the best movies ever made, and most movie critics sprout wood while discussing them.

Casablanca
Citizen Kane

I get to about the 10 minute mark and I just can’t take it any longer. Maybe it’s just me? But I don’t get the hype.

Citizen Kane is awful I’ve not watched Casablanca to be honest. Not surprised it sucks as well tho.

To be really honest, most “classic” flicks and all musicals Pretty much are awful. Never saw the appeal personally. There are exceptions of course. To each their own I suppose.

Saying Citizen Kane is like saying 'Stairway to Heaven' for music. I get it, but it's a pretty common choice. I'll say Lawrence of Arabia. It's fine, but like many other epics from the 1960s, it's bloated and too "grand" for it's own good. It's a guy and his desert adventures for almost four hours.

Totally agree about 2001. I get why it impressed moviegoers and why it's so influential, but it's so, so boring. It's the only Kubrick movie I dislike.

I'm not a big fan of Nolan's Batman movies. They're just a little too serious and straightforward for me.

Citizen Kane was the first one I thought of. Casablanca, as another has said, is a great movie.

West Side Story is awful. I mean gang members dancing around? Some of the music is very good but the story and the misplaced choreography is punishment. I couldn't finish 2001: A Space Odyssey so I can't put in on my list although it bored my bag off what little I did watch.

Never saw Lawrence of Arabia or Dr. Schivago. If I had, I feel certain they'd be on this list.

How did this win best picture? It was like a daytime soap opera set on a boring boat. I remember we actually went to the theater to watch this movie for school when it came out and some kid actually cried. He was rightfully bullied the rest of middle school, high school, and hopefully the rest of his life.

I'm going to admit that I've never seen the Godfather. I've never had an interest in seeing the Godfather. I do not know if it's overrated or not. I've tried to get through 2001, I can't do it. I never understood why the Sound of Music was so great. I've tried to watch Citizen Kane.

Gone With the Wind is terrible, and not just for the stupid take on race. It’s just a big mess of overacting.

If I want to watch Al Pacino in a classic, I will watch Dog Day Afternoon. If I want to watch Robert Duval and Marlin Brando, I will watch Apocalypse Now.

I disagree with Lawrence of Arabia. I agree that it is an hour and a half too long. I have a very deep interest in British military history.

Casablanca is a great movie, context in time needs to be accounted for but the performances are spot on.

Citizen Kane, meh.

I always thought Network wasn't worth the film it is shot on. Same goes for Dog Day Afternoon. Same with The Big Lebowski, the dude does not abide here.

Saw this movie on a blind date in the theater - fell asleep halfway through - woke up at the end and my date was crying - needless to say I never talked to her again

When I was young, thought The Graduate was just the best. Now seems as dated as me. Not bad, just not great.

When I rewatch Titanic I fast forward to the part where the ship hits the iceberg and start there.

Saying "I love Citizen Kane" is like saying "How do you like my Rolex watch?"

I watched Apocalypse Now several years ago and just didn't get most of it. I must have not been high enough. I thought The Deer Hunter was beyond depressing.

I agree about 2001. I've always found it boring. But Kubrick is a genius and it's a classic whether I like it or not. But I'd rather watch Star Wars or Alien.

I concur on Apocalypse Now....it's like somebody took a giant dump, then went back later & put corn in the pile by hand. It's just a giant stinking mess.

Good Lord. Apocalypse Now and LOA are awesome movies. Gotta admit I haven't seen Citizen, and can't remember Casablanca. Gone with the Wind was torture when my mother watched it every year when I was a kid.
I'll add a couple to the list.
The French Connection did nothing for me.
From Here to Eternity was MEH.

Citizen Kane is considered great because of all of the groundbreaking techniques that Orsen Welles did filming it and not so much that it is a great story.

My nominee is "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Snoozefest.
Agreed.

Imagine trying to get this filmed in today's world: "Mickey Rooney, wearing a fake tan, taped back eyes, and prosthetic buck teeth, parodies the character of a Japanese..."

No freakin way.

Going to commit blasphemy here: Never saw a John Wayne movie I liked, or could even sit through. OTOH, love all the Eastwood westerns. Go figure . . . .

Seriously? The Searchers? Stagecoach? Red River? Fort Apache? Too many to name.

I’ll agree with you on John Wayne, with one exception. “Rio Bravo”. That is a top 10 Western movie, and an entertaining film.
