Too many threads concerning the next head coach on this board right now. The more realistic question to be asking is who will Stoops hire as the next defensive coordinator when Eliot is let go (or "finds a new job") at the end of the season?

Who could Stoops hire that would be an immediate high impact?

If you are going to try to pull a position coach from Alabama, then Tosh Lupoi is the far greater option over Ansley.

He could step down take his buyout pack his bags and leave. That would have the most positive impact on the program.

I agree with OP that this probably the most likely result to this season. We'll win 4 or 5, Mitch will retain him because no one is going to bail out Mitch on that moronic buyout, and a competent DC will be brought in. No matter the result of this season DJ has to go. Remains to be seen whether Stoops will be with him.

House is a good guess. Has nothing to do with Barnhart or cheap. Everyone has a coaches on the hot seat list, and Stoops is near the top of them all. What DC worth wanting is going to walk into that gig. If you already got a guy wo was DC at Pitt, not likely to do better...

Agreed. Any outside DC worth having would ask for a multi-year guaranteed contract just to have a serious discussion. It's sad but clear that Eliot isn't getting it done.

If that is the case, then UK must go after a younger coach or someone from a smaller program who is hungry for a chance. Fresh blood must be brought into this staff to keep the fanbase intrigued and the players believing. The coach in the position must also believe that he is working for something other than just a paycheck until he is let go.

If it is House, then Stoops is just mailing it home. No gain for UK at all and another lost year. All UK fans should vehemently be opposed to Matt House being the DC. I highly doubt that Stoops stakes his last chance on House anyway, and he is far from the "best option". That's just defeatist attitude to think that we seriously can't do better than House.

Can you explain what makes him good? He was fired from Pittsburgh as a DC. I can't cite anything that he has ever done to support the notion that he would be a remotely effective DC for UK.

Special teams is the equivalent of a position coach. That's why special teams "coordinators" don't make real coordinator (OC/DC) money. They make position coach money.

No I don't say things without knowing the facts. What I read was the two years that he was at Pitt, his defenses were ranked 33th and 34th, that didn't sound bad to me that's why I asked you. Plus the HC got the Wisconsin job, House was let go when the new staff was hired.

He has been DC at other schools. Pitt beat us in a bowl back in 2010. We aren't above them. The guy can coach.

Btw - our special teams have been terrible since Paveto left after Stoops' first year. The guy has turned around an incredibly important part of the game.

Statistics can be misleading. Teams that don't really play against good offenses will tend to rank higher. The animosity toward him in his last year at Pittsburgh was comparable to how many UK fans feel against Eliot right now.

Chryst could have found room for him at Wisconsin if he wanted to. He didn't want to, so he hung him out to dry, which forced him to take a step down to FIU.

Pitt beat us when Joker was our coach!? #Shocked.

Pitt is an easier job than UK, and notice how he did not take a step up from there after having such spectacular success.

If I were Stoops, I'd retain control myself next yr. Objective would be to reach a bowl, gain some fan/media support, build some player/recruit confidence......then hire someone once stability is established.

Thats why I asked you the question. You have to admit the stats don't lie but there are always other things to consider with coaches.

I don't think that having your HC fired and demoted to DC would ever work in a thousand years. I could only imagine the locker room problems. You got to let your new HC pick his staff.

If Coach Stoops wins two more games, then he will be back. I hope he continues calling the plays on defense, just as several HC's call the plays on offense. Petrino, Brohm and Holgorsen to name a few. Neal Brown probably calls the plays at Troy.
Coach Stoops was an excellent DC when he was at FSU.

I know right. Some on this thread weren't even aware that he was on the staff already. We clearly need to aim a little higher than that.

You can aim all you want but unless Barney is willing to put up big money in the form of a guaranteed contract, it won't do you any good. As several poster have pointed out, why would a respected DC come here without guaranteed money?

Pelini would be a good one. Very good, even. Would love to retain DJ Eliot though. He may be an awful coordinator, but he can coach outside linebackers. Ware and Allen have become exponentially better.

If Stoops comes back (and I think he does) I think MB should just let him fix it himself. He is a former DC and no reason to waste any more money bringing in someone else. Let Stoops continue doing what he is now and if it works out stay the course. If the defense is bad it's on him..
