3 years older than me. Lol. When did you get lost?
Hold on, I may have pegged you wrong. What exactly do you stand for? Your democrat right? Are you Vax or bust? Pro-BLM and anyone else is racist? Lol. Just curious because I personally believe folks around our age probably were raised with the best mix of parenting, discipline, exposure and respect. Just my opinion.

Family comes first. Married 23 years. Liberal/Mod but believe it or not I’m not very political at all. I do hate one particular politician but we all know that. Pro Vax personally but unless you work directly with people who are the most at risk then you make your own choice. I’m fine with BLM as long are you are smart enough to separate supporting black lives, which I do, and groups that do harm to others, which I don’t. Born and raised in SE Ky. Raised by my mother with help from my grandparents, especially my grandma. Could count on one hand the number of days in the last 20 years I haven’t spoken to my mom. Originally mommas boy and proud of it. Go agreed and bash me to bits. I’m used to it. Skin gets thick as you get older.

They have the right to vote with their feet by leaving Spotify. It’s a free country.

But their goal in doing so boils down to censorship.

I would say that history will not be kind to those who are wanting to censor Rogan, but of course they may end up writing history. They control academia, federal government, and tech.

I never thought this could happen here.

I don't know jack about Joe Rogan, but I doubt he's endorsing hate speech. And so he shouldn't be censored.

This is the USA. We have a First Amendment that gives us Free Speech. It does not say anything about "Hate Speech".

"Hate Speech" is a made up lefty term that they use at will to label anything they want.

The Supreme Court defined "hate speech" in Matel v. Tam:

That 'ol "lefty" Judge Alito said:
Speech that demeans on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground is hateful; but the proudest boast of our free speech jurisprudence is that we protect the freedom to express “the thought that we hate.”

Not that any of that applies to Joe Rogan. The First Amendment only prevents Congress from censoring speech, and Congress isn't trying to shut Rogan down. Non-government entities like Spotify can shut down anyone they want for anything (just go ask Whoopie Goldberg, who just got suspended by ABC for stupid comments).

I love all of the 1st amendment lawyers who don't understand that your speech isn't free when tied to an employer.

I seldom agree with a take from Rogan but I'm very different from him and his lifestyle. Spotify knew what they were getting into with him because they don't want to pay royalties on music. They'll add a stupid label and go about their day unless a Taylor swift or someone of her stature decides to move on.

Don't much care for Neil Young but if you feel so inclined to disagree with someone to the point of taking a monetary loss (and it certainly appears he was making some kind of money on Spotify) I can respect that. It's no different from necks boycotting Yeti or Carhartt in my opinion.

He made a monetary decision in leaving Spotify. Guarantee the downloads of his music have jumped since he got in the news. No one had thought about Neil Young in the last 20 years.

And sales of Carhartt and Yeti went through the roof as a counter protest. Kind of proves the point, doesn't it? Neil Young didn't do this because he thought Spotify was about to remove a dude they just paid 100 million for. I don't know him well enough to believe he's educated enough on this topic to even understand what he's complaining about.

Hell, if what I read before is correct, he was reluctant to go to Spotify to begin with. Looks like he was just looking for a bone to pick. Either way, his intention is to get bigger fish on board so it affects Spotify's bottom line (which it temporarily did) and forced them to come out with their advisory label ********. People know what to expect with Joe Rogan and his podcast. It's all over the place. Dude is clearly not what everyone thinks he is.

None of this is an issue unless actual big name artists start to remove their stuff from Spotify. And, given how they seem to pay less than nearly every other streaming service but are somehow the largest streaming service, it might be in the artists interest to do so anyway.

Right. Speech that is hateful is still Free Speech and the government can't act against it. I know that. I also know that it doesn't apply to companies. The mob appears to have control over them as we saw with the riots and the pandering to appease them.

Funny thing is years ago Neil Young had a piece in rolling stone where he made all kinds of insane statements about vaccines and autism.

No one on team woke seems to care tho.

What I think is even more funny, is the corporate media's meltdown over Rogan. The dude is a comedian, who does interviews...not news. That they are comparing themselves against him tells you all you need to know. Not to mention, the same ppl that whine about rogan are the same ppl that will unironically turn around and watch Trevor noah...a comedian, also a monster idiot...yet I guess bc he wears a suit, and sits behind a news desk, and only gives one point of view affirming their confirmation bias, that's okay.

And one more point- here's another problem with the media and much of the left. Anything that doesn't fit into their box of purity amd groupthink is all of a sudden "right wing". Rogan was a bernie supporter, who's been critical of the Trump base...yet bc he dares talk to different ppl, that makes him "right wing". They do the same thing with Glenn Greenwald.

Thats what's so pathetic.. they own the nightly news, music, movies.. they beat you over the head from shows like SNL, Colbert, Kimmel, Noah and a dozen others. We eat this **** for years, and kind of just shrug it off.

.. yet they can't handle ONE guy with a podcast?

That's the worst part.. those late night talk shows that Libs didn't seem to have any issue with, when they spend half the show spewing propaganda. So to be such hypocrits after ingesting all of that, to try and block conservatives from enjoying this one guy we have.. who isn't even conservative!!! .. just so fascist of them..

Neil Young did it for a publicity stunt. Since this announcement SiriusXM gave him his own channel, young people are talking about him that likely had never heard of him.
It’s all a joke, Neil Young rose to fame fighting “ the man”, yet he’s all in on silencing Joe Rogan? He’s a fraud.

If Neil Young had told Spotify "either remove my music or Ted Nugent's music" then I agree there would be a real problem vis a vis an attempt to "censor" artistic content. But I seriously doubt that Neil (or any artist) would do that. Joe Rogan is not a musician or an artist. He has a podcast. There is a big difference, but I doubt that most on this thread will see that.

Spotify competes with Apple Music and Amazon Music. It has been seen, however, as by far the best music streaming service b/c it cares about music fans. It's "curation" of music in playlists, recommended songs and albums, etc. is unparalleled. And the reason why it is so good is that it has to be - Apple and Amazon obviously are not music streaming companies first and foremost, but Spotify is.

If Spotify is now going away from music and getting into the opinion/content game (which it obviously is) I wonder how that will affect its reputation as the preeminent music streaming serice?

Sounds good. Kind of an agree to disagree guy myself. Raised in our era positioned us well for a time like this IMO. Taking a wooden spoon with a hole in it to the *** a couple of times a week hurts a lot more than someone disagreeing with me or calling me names on the internet.

I may be old fashioned, but I can't think of any musical artist that I care enough about to make me want to close my account and follow them to another service because they pulled their **** when their censoring demands failed.

If free speech is that much of a problem, I'm sure I can live without them.
As I said, I have over 30 Neil Young songs on my playlist. While that's around 3% of the songs I have, I really like those songs and like being able to listen to them. I parted ways with Spotify to go to Amazon, where I can continue to have those on my playlist. It doesn't matter to me why those songs are no longer available on Spotify, or who is responsible. Our favorite restaurant here has a unique, fantastic appetizer. We always get one when we go, and sometimes will only get a couple of those instead of a meal. If they were to pull that menu item for whatever reason, we'd still go there...but, if another local restaurant started making that appetizer, that would become our go to place, and we'd never visit the other restaurant again. There are no hard feelings from me towards Spotify. I don't care that Rogan has a podcast there or anywhere. I don't care that Young (and others) pulled his music. It's his/their music. I went to Amazon because it's where I can get the music I want to listen to. If, for whatever reason Amazon doesn't have the music I want, I'll go elsewhere.

There is the First Amendment and then there is a philosophy about living in a free community that honors free speech. One can base their “right” only on the law or can aspire to a society that honors freedom, not just because it is the law. So, it is a bit cliche for a message board poster to chide people for honoring and aspiring to freedom by attempting to edumacate them about the difference between government infringement and the rights of employers. No doubt, some do not know the distinction, but we all can favor and call for freedoms that are not constitutional. Sure, Spotify and some old self-indulgent rocker may censor Rogan, but I will still be a proponent of people, not just government, respecting others freedom to say what they wish. It is an inalienable right that we should not categorize only as incorporated into the legal fabric.

As to respecting a pretentious blow-hard like Young because of what you perceive him giving up for his stance, I doubt this is truly a sacrificial act. Regardless of his motives, he knows there are a bunch of Covid crazies who will re-tweet and applaud him for his amazing stance. And, didn’t he recently sell a great deal of his book for large sum. Neil Young ain’t hurting over this big bold move. In fact, I doubt he has received this kind of attention over the past ten years collectively.

This Rogan thing is very easy, if you’re for censoring him, you’re wrong and you’re the bad guy, period, end of story.

The man has opinions that some like and some don’t, depending on the topic. He has a right to discuss any subject with any person he likes, because the market gives him that freedom. If his rating were garbage, the market would take care of him. He’s popular for a reason.

The big thing for Spotify is that it's platform agnostic. Unlike Apple Music or Google Play, each of which can't be used by half of America right off the bat. And it can be had for free if you choose. There isn't another player in this space at the moment. Tidal is a bit more for the enthusiast, and also has no free tiers last I checked.

I think the other big thing for Spotify is it's sheer music catalog which dwarfs Apple and anyone else. So not only for the music enthusiasts do they have a better platform, but you can really go down a rabbit hole of a genre and find unique things. As a post-hardcore/mathrock fan, you have bands that formed last week putting their music on there.

I don't see Spotify going away from that.. but maybe they are just bolstering their podcast/talk show offerings. It does seem that's where the money can start rolling in.

As for the first part, I don't see the "big difference" just because one is a different type of "radio" media. It's still censoring. If you get rid of Joe Roagn, then get rid of Late Night TV, Trevor Noah, etc.

Those latter mentioned shows will abide by the liberal viewer’s rule book. Make jokes of anyone, but only demean THEM and do not, under any circumstances, give them a platform to show they have good points. That is why Joe is scary to them. He gives the platform to anyone he thinks is interesting.

I fail to see why Rogan has become public enemy #1. Used to listen to some of his interviews before he hit Spotify. I've heard him say more than once that he's just a pothead who reads a lot. He's criticized both sides and doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. I remember once he interviewed Bill Burr and acted like no one needs to wear a mask. Later on, he said that he was just busting Burr's balls and wanted him to go on an angry rant about masks and that he (Rogan) had a mask in his pocket at all times.

As for Young, odd stance to take, but his name is out there again and maybe that's what he wants. I can see the publicly helping both him and Rogan actually.

Rogan is public enemy #1 because more people trust him than the mainstream media/politicians. People would rather watch 3 hours of unedited conversation than listen to what Brian Stelter tells us to think.

I don’t find Rogan’s standup particularly funny, and I’m not a huge fan of his but I like his format and I listen to the guests he has on that I like. I’ve found the people who don’t like him, have never really listened to him but don’t like him because CNN and other outlets say he’s bad. That’s why he’s labeled far right. That’s the common language for leftists when they don’t like someone.

It's very simple. It's because the mainstream media is being paid to push the vaccine and they are afraid that he and his guests will derail their agenda, therefore they smear him and just as you would expect from dumbass actors, sports figures and musician sheeple they back the media up with their purported "power". Just glad it didn't work in this case and the Spotify folks were smart enough to read through it.

I just think it's important that you distinguish an attempt to "censor" from a guy having the ability to speak his mind. Spotify has done nothing to Joe Rogan other than a "label" which merely states that Joe is expressing an opinion. My problem with Joe has little to do with politics and more to do with tin foil hat theories that feed a particular subset of people. I'm not calling him Alex Jones, but am noticing some tendencies.

He gained this audience by having compelling conversation. He's weaponized it in some ways recently by frequently needling those who "oppose" him. That's his right, but don't think people who disagree with him won't be able to use the fact that he's been booking a very particular group of folks lately as a reason to question his motives/intentions.

I actually agree with some of what Malone stated but rolled my eyes as hard as Rogan did when he started making some of the more tin foil claims he did about things like gunshot wound deaths labeled as COVID, etc.

Neil Young seems like an antagonist to Rogan, at the moment. That may drum up business for him but don't think that every person that dislikes Neil Young but, somehow, hasn't heard of Joe Rogan isn't suddenly doing searches and supporting an opposing view there either. This knife cuts both ways. We're pawns in this war of information.

My whole point is this, the fact that every time someone says something of even sight controversy you can automatically assume how everyone will respond to it based on their identity politics is what is undermining this country right now. Race, greed, wealth, guns, abortion and every other single-issue voter ******** we heard about through the nineties but assumed only the least common denominator would actually cared about became mainstream politics. And why wouldn't it? Easier for a politician to deceive you when you're a binary white or black rather than 800 other options.

This is where we are. A guy talking about vaccines with a medical professional is national news on a music streaming service because of a hippy who hasn't charted a single in nearly two decades and that news is more important than a war between Russia and (basically) NATO or the fact that our economy is nearly in shambles and people are still struggling mightily. But, that keeps the attention of good ole Biden, so I guess it all makes sense.

Completely false. Caught in another lie. You defend pedophilia, all leftist propaganda and are posting in a political thread.
I told a leftie family member about five years ago that pedophiles would have political advocates in the near future. She scoffed. The attempt to normalize pedophilia is disgusting and evil.

So you can censor a podcast but not music.... got it.
