I don't know for sure that they reviewed his film. But they have several guys on staff that were tasked with looking at film of prospects at positions they were interested in, so it's highly probable that they looked at his film.

As for contacting him, I really don't know whether they did or not. Sometimes agents leak info to recruiting sites, but universities usually are pretty closed lip about their actions, as they don't want the competition to know their level of interest. I don't recall anything leaking about with regard to St. John and PSU, but again, that's hardly definitive.

FWIW, Purdue has signed quite a few DL prospects out of the portal this year. They really seem to be putting energy and focus in landing DL guys.
