Spurrier told me the story on Wednesday about when he arrived as the head coach of the Florida Gators in 1990 and noticed that all the incoming freshmen had shaved their heads. When he asked them why, one of the freshmen told him, “The upperclassmen forced us to do it.”
Spurrier quickly called a team meeting and told all of his players, “We’re not doing that crap around here anymore. We’re not going to harass the freshmen.”
Replied one of the upperclassmen: “But, Coach, that’s a tradition around here.”
Spurrier fired back: “Getting our asses kicked by Georgia is also a tradition around here, and we’re gonna stop that tradition, too.”
And that was the end of hazing at the University of Florida during the Steve Spurrier era. …
