FSU has serious issues in general, outside of Norvell. The location of their campus puts them a long ways from where most of their alumni and fans live. I read that only something like 20% of FSU alumni live within three hours of campus. If their team isn't good, really good, they have a hard time filling up the stadium. People who don't go to the games don't generally donate.

I'm not sure I see that as "taking a shot". I view it more as a comment on the state of college football in general these days. The programs with really deep pockets and wealthy, generous alumni and boosters are the only ones who can afford to fire underperforming coaches.

I was surprised UK fired Stoops. They must have had a big money donor step up and offer to help with the buyout.
