When the opponent wrestles that well it’s hard to feel bad about it. Spencer was still doing Spencer things. Double overs counter was sick but you’ll give up 4 everytime when you’re doing it off a blast double. And then Harutunyan hit the gas pedal instead of trying to coast. Great wrestling. Just gotta tip your cap.

That's a stunner.

Harutyunyan is plenty credentialed, of course:

  • Olympics = 7th in 2024 (1-1), 13th in 2021 (0-1)
  • SR Worlds = 3rd in 2023, 3rd in 2022 (61kg), 3rd in 2021 (61kg), 16th in 2019 (1-1)
  • U23 Worlds = 1st in 2022 (61kg), 1st in 2021 (61kg)
  • U20 Worlds = 3rd in 2018, 3rd in 2017 (55kg)
  • Euros = 2nd in 2025 (lost 5-7 to Z. Uguev at 61kg)

Having said that, he's cutting down from 61kg, and is known as someone who both gives up a lot of points and is less-than-spectacular in par terre.

For context, his Round of 16 win earlier today was a 13-8 dec. over the #8 seed from Mongolia.

So yeah, I never saw this one coming.

Some guys are just injury prone. You can blame it on Iowa or the coaches, but the simple truth is, that doesn’t change at another program, or with different coaches, unless you are taking PED’s and even that is unlikely to help someone like Spencer…

Spencer, within one minute of the start of a match is one of the greatest wrestlers in the world. I don't think it's his wrestling. I think it's evaporating gas tank.
^Spencer was exhausted after the first 38 sec and that first exchange. If you watch his knees they start to lock out when he gets in his stance and he tries posting with a straight left hand. You can see in his knees/legs and his lack of hand fighting he was done.

There is a difference when Spencer hand fights to score and when he hand fights to survive, and from that point his whole attack changed.

I don't think anyone doubts Spencer's ability, but it is a shame that his conditioning/weight cut keep him from wrestling/attacking for a full 6 minutes.

As a fan this has always been disappointing.
