St. Laurence announced yesterday that they plan to build a 40k square foot on-campus Fieldhouse. This was much needed since going co-ed. More locker room space for the girls teams both in the old building and new building and much needed additional gym space for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, etc. The new building will be adjacent to the football field in the west end zone, so I’m assuming the football team will be utilizing the locker rooms, training rooms, weight room, etc. in the fall. In the renderings, you can see that it shows a concession stand on the side facing the football field. I had heard last year that they plan to also build a clubhouse/indoor training facility for the baseball/softball teams, but I haven’t seen anything official yet. Glad to see that the school is showing further commitment to athletics since making several several major renovations to the existing school building in the past few years. Several state trophies and one state title in the past three years. Hopefully just getting started.

Nice. Any thoughts on the game?

I’m a realist. The Flyers are really talented. The Vikings need to play a perfect game and have a lot of things go their way if they have a chance.

I will say this. This team has grit and they are very healthy for week 13. They were picked to lose the last two games and are still alive. The last two opponents were not nearly as good as ESL though.

Between StL and JCA facilities expansion, seeing this for the privates is great to hear.

Anectodally a lot of Nazareth's recent athletic success (football but plenty of other sports too) trailed closely behind renovations and additions to those spaces. Kind of fun to see athletes build their skills when they're not running practices in a cafeteria or something.

If only Naz can get a fieldhouse with some indoor turf or lockroom type building between the fields for FB and Baseball would be great.

Do they have the room to do it? They are pretty landlocked, no?

I think they should consider building a multipurpose grandstand facility on teh East side (current visitor side) making the current homeside the visiting side.

The new building could be a two story sports facility track and field baseball football soccer softball tennis pretty much anything that gets rained or snowed out. It would also be the new lockerroom facility and pressbox along with concessions and restrooms and storage.

Not to hijack the St Laurence thread, but do they not still use that part for practice fields? Fitting what they've been able to fit in is quite the accomplishment already. Short of land acquisition they're pretty locked now from anything else other than minor tweaks to facilities.

ESL has a great team w/o a doubt but the word "grit" (as mentioned above) best describes many of the STL players and the team overall. I have had the pleasure to meet and chat with some of the players and I know some parents quite well. The Vikings will hang in there - if they could keep offenses like Montini and Carmel to 23 and 21 points respectively, I think they will compete and hang in there. Maybe the ESL offense is on another level but the Vikings will control the ball hopefully and figure out a way to win - regardless great season any season you play 13 games! Go Vikings & Defend the Glory!

I’m always rooting for the Chicagoland Area, but this is a clear impossible task This week. ESL is way to fast on both sides of the ball.
I have to agree. The more I watch the more it’s pretty obvious the only team that could beat them is MC. They’re pretty good and by that I mean College vs hs athletes good

The St. Laurence success story just keeps getting better and better.

That school was on the ropes 20 years or so ago. Enrollment was declining big time and they were facing death by a thousand cuts.

Then they got some new blood in leadership. They were able to outlast Peace and ultimately go coed on their own and acquire Peace students. Their lay leadership keeps getting stronger and stronger. Their community has stepped up and invested heavily in the school, and it continues to do so as evidenced by this most recent announcement.

There aren't many Catholic schools in these parts that have done what Laurence has in terms of turning things around so successfully. Ignatius (yes, Ignatius) is one. Gordon Tech/DePaul Prep is another.

Much respect to the Vikes.

The current President, Dr. Martinez, saved that school even though he’d never take credit. He’s an alum, played football at West Point, and took the reins at StL about 15 years ago. He had the stones to take some major risks and the charisma to convince the religious leadership that change and progress were necessary. He has also engaged and encouraged alumni to reinvest in the school like other very successful schools (MC, BR, Rita). I think their current fund raising campaign has raised over $10 million for capital improvements. He has made some great hires, both academically and athletically. He put a great AD in place. I was recently back in the building and was floored at all that’s been done in the past decade. That new field house was much needed and hopefully can bring the wrestling program up to speed with the rest of the sports programs. I honestly think and hope the best is yet to come for the Vikings.
