So 31 has had 3 all Americans. Are there others that wore 31. Maybe we should call it a special name.

I agree 11 was not the only number, but a tradition has to start somewhere. I think this is actually a pretty cool thing. I'll be curious if the give out number 11 if no linebacker is "worthy"
This whole stix thing is a recruiting gimmick IMO. If it works I’m all for it!
The tradition didn’t start with 11. To keep hyping 11 and connecting it to LBU diminishes the greatness of those who wore other numbers, including those before the 11s.

We have one of the best players in the NFL behind this modern tradition--why is that remotely bad? No one is denying other greats played here...but if this growing tradition attracts publicity to the best linebacker school ever, fantastic. And maybe, just maybe, it keeps attracting some other greats to come here and play and wear "11" as well.
If everyone in the Peach Bowl played with the heart of our current "11", we would have won that game. Attacking that tribute video is so like so many on this board...attacking things because well, they just have to attack. "For f*ck sake" is the perfect phrase for this entire dialogue.

PSU has been known as LBU for decades. It didn’t start with LaVar and 11. There are any number of ways to promote PSU as LBU. STICKS.

Lavar wearing 11 (after wearing 9 at North Hills) had an impact on college football none of the others had - remember watching college football games after he left and more often than not the best LBs for every team wore 11.
Took the words right out of my mouth. You see more number 11's at the LB position than any other number in college football. So to not use it as a promotional thing is down right stupid especially these days of social media.
After Shane Conlan, Brad "Spider" Caldwell used to assign #31 to the best LB (or most promising) of the fresh crop. Then, I think per the story that I read or heard, he mentioned to Lavar to create his own number legacy, and he chose 11. Someone at BWI can perhaps verify. Still, after Lavar, Poz was given 31 after a season wearing 39. Bowman switched to 11 after wearing 18 for a couple seasons. After that, and as 11 became more popular nationally, 11 was the jersey number to aspire to. I think Mac wore #31 at that time (played with Lavar), and he was an excellent LB as well.
But our LBs have been great since the early 60s, or at least since Dave Robinson, playing both TE and LB, wore 89 (I think - same as he wore at Green Bay). Ham #33, Onkotz #35, Buttle #67, and on and on through the 70s, there was no single jersey number that identified that position. But the one LB who was most identified with a specific number at PSU was Conlan and #31 in the early-to-mid 80s. The 2000s saw many great LBers, including Connor #40, Lee #45.
This is why I'd love to see a Ring of Honor at PSU. Let people and players always remember who wore the important numbers and what they meant to the program and to PSU. Let's always have a #11 and #31 LBer. Let's make sure they know the legacy they are following and have them aspire to be worthy of walking in those shoes.
