Severe had a clip of "the Bear" from Gameday said he thinks 6-6 is most likely scenario, maybe 7-5. FPI ranks us 54.
We have a lot of unknowns at this point, but I think I'd bet the overs.

Maybe somebody forgot to tell them our QB graduated?
Part of the analysis is that TA, who was a big part of our offensive production, did graduate. I think few outside of the program are aware of the likelihood that Lee for TA could be addition by subtraction in terms of the offense Riley/Langs want to run. Not bagging on TA, we were lucky he was here.

It surprises me to hear that someone thinks we'll go 6-6 but I am not surprised that it was Mike'l Severe who said that. My guess is Vegas is tentatively at 7 wins. As we get closer to Sept. 2, I bet our O/U goes up to 7.5 or even 8 by the time the dust settles and fall camp concludes.

I tend to think 7-8 wins is the ceiling based on the depth problems still haunting them at key positions. Injuries happen and we've seen how that's come back to haunt them late in the season.

Lots of "points" given to Northwestern and Oregon for the amount of production they return on offense even though it was only good enough to go .500 or worse last year.

The lack of offensive production returning impacts the FPI and the Vegas index greatly.

I just find it strange that Minnesota is getting a benefit of the doubt in some of these indices. New coach, new QB.

I think, for whatever reason, that it is kind of fashionable among some pundits to downplay Nebraska. 6-6?? Really? We have had four... that's right ... four seasons, in the past 55 years where we either broke even or had a losing season. And while it is true we have not, of late, recruited elite talent, we also haven't been dredging the bottom of the lake either.

We have outrecruited Minnesota and Northwestern and beat them both last year. Yet somehow those are losses this year because they have more starters back than we do? I am glad their starters are back. Our guys were better than those guys last year and probably will be this year too.

Bingo. Nailed it.
Our defense is supposed to be mediocre this year because we have a new DC, but Minnesota, with its new coach and QB, is suddenly a loss for us.

There was an article in the paper on PSU recently. Very cool. The coach turned around the D and it wasn't enough, then they started the season 2-2
- then basically the offense took a leap up and gathered another 10% plus production, made all the
difference. 9 wins straight I believe....
- I believe our D is turned around, they just have to unleash it and make a few adjustments.
- There is more than enough talent to take the jump in O production now, and more likely to exceed
than not take a similar to PSU jump.
- We were having to overcome our special teams bottom feeder results / think we will hit upper half
this year. Think back to DPE winning games.
- D is very stingy in Red Zone under this coordinator , hoorah!
- O will kill the same teams that beat us stacking the box last year, if they don't back out.

Based on our blow out losses last year especially the half effort at Iowa and in the bowl this seems fair. Until we prove we have an offensive line, kicking game and pass rush I see no reason for us to be ranked.

Not much different from the Pelini years. Things are trending upward!

And...

Complete a screen pass, not throw the ball off your back foot rolling out to the left, call/execute an actual running play to get a first down on third and very short, have both offensive tackles stone a speed pass rusher and not resemble a swinging gate...

This thread could go on until kickoff. Winking

There was one game last season that makes everyone, including pollsters, rethink where the huskers are headed. That loss is inexplicable and it has led to much head scratching and confusion as to how good the huskers can be in 2017. MR has used up a lot of credit with the way the team performed in 2015 and that one turd of a game they played in 2016.

Please clarify, can you explain the loss in question? I thought I knew where the huskers were and where they were headed until that game. After that game I was completely confused and was happy that game resulted in the D coordinator change. There are certain teams the huskers should beat nearly every time and when they lose it should be close. Additionally, in 2015 MR coached the huskers out of a few wins. That's my opinion, you don't have to agree, but at least explain yourself.

This time of year, coaches are learning about their own 2nd and 3rd string QB development, not another team's new QB. They don't know nor care about Tanner Lee because even if Nebraska is as good as Wisconsin, the schedule still heavily favors Wisconsin. These coaches polls are heavily, heavily influenced by final wins/losses of last year and school tradition. Texas, for example. Should Nebraska have made the top 25? If so, who didn't deserve it?

Not sure I follow... Texas finished with a losing record last year, and we finished with 9 wins.

Using your argument, I would say Texas doesn't belong.

There was only one game last season that is totally inexplicable. One game, where the team, prior to playing the huskers, looked completely inept on offense. Maybe it's just me, but that one game made me rethink where I thought the huskers were in terms of the MR era.

Assuming you mean the game where TA was a statue and Ryker had a broken arm? That would have made our offense look pedestrian in my opinion...

Edit: of course, the defense also looked bad, but they knew they had no help from the offense. It was bad all around.
