When NU had a easy opportunity for a 100-yard pick-six at the end of the Stanford game, our DB purposely slid down, and the game was effectively over.

When Tennessee had the nearly identical situation today, they chose to get that pick-six and run up the score.

It was a BOWL game, not a regular season game, let the kids enjoy themselves. I would have felt that way if the rolls were reversed.

Sorry. I quess it would have been a better game if you had played Vandy instead. I don't dislike you guys in any way. Just don't see how you were ranked.
Always seems funny to me, you guys were not taking a knee! Right.

If you guys didn't want to play football at that point, you should have taken a knee. The guy doesn't even start on defense and you guys were throwing it with less than a minute to go down 30.

Why wasn't NW taking a knee if the game was over? There nothing wrong with Berry taking it the distance.

Disagree wholeheartedly. The kid made a play and deserved to get the score. I would've applauded him for a slide, but don't fault him for the memorable play.

We had 2nd and 3rd stringers in with 10 minutes to go. We did all we could not to beat you any worse. Can't tell kids not to play ball. Silly to suggest so, particularly with your offense trying to score.

Maybe, the Vols should have all laid down at the snap of the ball? Tennessee had the subs in the game early in the 4th.

I thought about that when the play was running, Dog, but then immediately--immediately--dismissed the thought. If NU had been running the clock out, the question would never have come up. NU was pushing for the end zone, so UT pushed for the end zone. There was nothing either "classy" or "classless" about it...the two teams were simply still playing a football game.

Last year Tennessee manhandled Iowa and was leading 45-7.

Then Iowa scored 3 trash TDs against the Vols 3rd stringers.
A year later, they claim "we only lost by 17" to you all.

Personally, I'm glad our coaches didn't completely tank it in the 4th quarter like last year. No animosity towards Northwestern, at all. No running it up either. It's called finishing.

Second team db take a knee? Maybe your slow big 10 guys should do a better job of tackling. This may be the biggest sissy post of all time. This isn't Upward football.. Everyone doesn't get a participation trophy... Maybe next time NW will decline the bowl if matched up against the SEC.

I believe that had we had the ball on offense Butch would have taken a knee just as he has in many other games. But, I think you have to consider that a young scrub who has not had many opportunities to play on the defensive side of the ball
just did what he has been taught and that is try to score. Sorry to say but it seems to me that you have eaten some sour grapes.

Wow, Dog, I totally have to disagree with you, and not for the reason of class of lack thereof. The Tennessee player basically has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I really know nothing about how good he is, what year he is, etc., but the odds of him getting to run in a touchdown in a bowl game again are probably pretty slim. He now has a memory he can enjoy for the rest of his life. Good for him.

At that point, it made very little difference to the teams if UT finished with 38 or 45, so I really see nothing classless in his scoring.

He is Eric Berry's younger brother and our kickoff returner. He ran three kickoffs back for touchdowns this year.

Cool. I'm still going with the theory that he probably won't have too many opportunities to run back a pick six in a New Years Day game, and I bet he now has a great story to tell family and friends. Again, good for the kid.

In fairness, that plsyer you're referring to has had a tough year. He's also a reserve who had a chance to make a great play and enjoy being the center of attention from his teammates for a few minutes. Don't turn the ball over and you won't have a DB taking it to the house.

It ain't Tennessee's job to keep them from scoring. If you want to say go to the ground because you end the game and don't give the opponent the score, I can see that reasoning (but still disagree with it) but don't say that you're supposed to go down out of mercy or class.

I have always loathed the idea of not putting up points when you can. Ever since MSU came back from 35 down. If anything take this as another thing we ought to learn from Tennessee.
