Odd that he didn't commit on campus. Maybe go home to pack, then make it official, and move in on Sunday?

I loved his highlights. Seems really good at throwing the ball before the receiver even looks at the qb for nice gains. As soon as the receivers turn around the ball is halfway to the receiver. Hopefully it translates to the SEC. Those are difficult throws to make that he looks good at making. Excited to see what he can bring.

Well, he s a 2 start recuit right ??

He's not the most decorated or high sought after but he's important.
-He adds much needed depth to a position of great need.
-He provides a large injection of athleticism to the position.....his mobility can be a very nice wrinkle to the offense as a starter or depth player.
-And he comes with recommendation from Hinshaw/Gran.....both of which know a decent QB prospect, how to develop them, and how to utilize their strengths.

We just do not know what to expect, but our evaluators, under tough circumstances, are reportedly among the best.

Plenty of two start athletes turn out great-----on their second start, or even their third start since he had to the JC route------remember Cam Newton-----not saying, just saying.

Aaron Rodgers would probably be a better example than Newton. Cam was a top prospect in high school, a top prospect at Florida, and a top prospect in JUCO. The only reason he ended up there was a character issue. Everyone was fighting for Cam after JUCO, and allegedly there was some extra incentive offered as well.

We need a back up QB with game experience just in case Barker doesn't perform or, God forbid, gets injured.

True enough, but two examples of QBs that went the JC route after enrolling in a regular college and returned to be stars.

Who can be unhappy if we get him? We are already bringing in 1 true freshmen QB in the class, Mac Jones. Barker will only be a sophmore. To fill out the depth chart getting a juco who has played for 2 years is a much better idea than just another true freshmen.

When Gran & Hinshaw were offered the UK jobs last month, they did a quick study on the top 17 available juco QB's. And Johnson emerged as the #1 target. Us landing who our new OC & QB coach want is a good thing people.

He's who they want out of a small pool of available, uncomitted players with no better offers. Don't act like they passed up on Jacob Eason to sign him.

Pretending he will ever be more than a serviceable back-up is delusional.

But that's OK. A serviceable JUCO is better than facing the year with a true freshman and RS freshman walk-on as your only other options.

Just for a pt of reference here...Mike Leach had a RS WALK ON soph qb this year throw for 4300 yds w/70% completion rate..36 tds/8 int...went 9-4 won their bowl game beat oregon..UCLA ..lead Stanford going into the 4th qtr losing 30- 28..hopefully this works out well for us if he comes here, but won't get hopes up

Yep... Again, these JUCO quarterbacks just don't get the evaluation. Just gotta see if he can play but appears to be very solid

I just think we are all nervous about quarterbacks as many of ours have struggled. Blame them or blame the offensive line or both....

Fact is the offensive line has good talent now given time. Fact is these are different quarterbacks. Give em a chance before complaining

How is this a point of reference for Steve Johnson? Where is the analogy?

There's a "rest of the story" re the WSU QB. Seems as if when he was a HS junior he was getting plenty of attention from recruiters, including FSU. Then for reasons I don't recall, he ended up going to several HSs his senior year and schools lost track of him. Heard this story during one of their games last year.

None the less, he did walk-on at WSU and landed in a system that favored his skills. Still, he wasn't a typical walk-on.

If he feels this way, he should go elsewhere. We need a starter who is not caught up in the trappings of recruiting and can come learn the system with an eye to being a leader, not serviceable. If only the Jacob Easons of the QB world became successful, I think the above post might make sense. But, there are no guarantees, and we have seen the overlooked become solid to great. Guys like Baker Mayfield never aspired to be serviceable.

Indeed.

But a good dose of reality is needed regarding expectations about him.

The good thing about reality is we only know it when we see it. Predictions become vapor fast when reality is exposed. So, you can predict low and others high. Time will only tell.

I wonder how many said he was delusional for thinking he could be a successful starter?

I think you meant Gunnar Hoak not Jones.

Who is it we are supposed to be taking instead right now to build depth? He looks solid. I don't get it.

Right. All the top rated QBs are probably gone by now anyway. And who knows, maybe Gran and Hinshaw did reach out to other QBs and they just weren't interested for whatever reason. I do think Johnson looks solid though, read something the other day saying he's the best JUCO QB in California.

Ignore the stars for Jucos. They often never get evaluated. Under most circumstances, P5 schools do not look to the Juco ranks for QBs, so simply looking at other offers can be misleading. The kid has height, foot speed and spears to have a good arm. Those things can be honed, but not taught. So, let's see what the staff can teach him to be.
