For most Muslims it's an absolute prohibition - Muhammad, or any of the other prophets of Islam, should not be pictured in any way. Pictures - as well as statues - are thought to encourage the worship of idols. This is uncontroversial in many parts of the Islamic world.

Nothing has changed accept your assumptions. You'll never read (or hear) me defend having the statues or the confederacy. The American consciousness post-reconstruction has held on too long to the romantic view of the confederacy as well as any benevolent reputation of KKK Byrd. I can't wait until Robert C. Correct. The only thing I’d wish for is that they put this to a vote vs. taking unilateral action. Let the people decide, and that’s more of a process issue than anything. Whether they stay or go means zero to me.
As I’ve said before, I’d personally advocate for their removal strictly on the grounds of removing excuses. Statutes are gone? Now what? Why are Democrats still failing inner cities?
what you are suggesting is a form of displacement. Real issues gets side tracked by a subordinate issues.
